Geographical notes
The gulf of Castellammare is a vast and deep natural inlet that goes from Capo Rama (in the vicinity of Terrasini) in Capo San Vito (near San Vito Lo Capo), but also a tourist area of Sicily. It is located on the northern coast of Sicily and overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Background
The gulf of Castellammare was called in Roman times "Sinus Aegestanus", with reference to the ancient city of Segesta, of which the ruins remain (including the temple and the theater).
In 1714 it was called by Guglielmo del Isle "gulf of Longuro or Longarico" in his geographical map, with reference to the ancient inhabited center that stood near today's city of Alcamo.
In 2001, the "Sviluppo del Golfo" company was established, within which the "Gulf of Castellammare Territorial Pact" was born, which is an agreement between various local authorities and representatives of the social and economic partners which has as its objective the local development of the gulf of Castellammare.
In 2010 the "Gulf of Castellammare Local Action Group" was also created, involving various municipalities, economic subjects, associations and professional organizations in order to implement a local development plan for the territory of the Gulf of Castellammare.
