Scopello is a city of Sicily.

To know

Scopello is a small and characteristic seaside village in Province of Trapani and is a fraction of Castellammare del Golfo. In the surrounding area there are some small beautiful farms and the Zingaro Nature Reserve is just a few kilometers away. The people of Scopello, like most Sicilians, are warm people and in Scopello there is no shortage of hospitality and good food. The best specialties are mainly based on fish.

When to go

Being a tourist resort, the best period is from April to October, but even in winter it is possible to visit it together with the other numerous nearby attractions such as Castellammare del Golfo, Calatafimi Segesta, Alcamo, the Zingaro Reserve, Erice, San Vito Lo Capo.

How to orient yourself

If you arrive from the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway, you have to exit at Castellammare del Golfo and from here continue on the State Road 187 towards Trapani. After about 5 km, enter the junction for Scopello. Immediately after Guidaloca you have to cross two small bridges and continue going up the road; after the curves, turn right onto the straight that leads to Scopello and the Riserva dello Zingaro.

There are 5 daily buses that depart from the Castellammare del Golfo bus station which can be reached from either Trapani that from Scopello.

There are many mountain trails and coves to explore. There is also the Environmental Education Center, two equipped areas and rural houses set up for bivouac. 
  • Grotto of Santa Margherita. On a sheer wall 15 meters above sea level. There are several paintings dating back to between the 13th and 14th centuries: a Madonna with Child, a Saint surrounded by Angels and, on the opposite side, a Crucifixion and other figures. 
  • Grotta della Ficarella. It is an underwater cave in the Zingaro reserve. It is accessed 14 meters deep. 
  • Cave of the Hermit (cave of the horse). Located in the mountainous complex of Monte Inici, it extends for 4,500 meters with a vertical drop of 310 meters. 
  • Abyss of the Cocci. With a development of 2,000 meters and a total height difference of 420 meters. 
  • 3 Baglio Isonzo. Next to the main square, Piazza Nettuno, is the famous 18th century beam: an Arab construction surrounded by houses, a small square and a stone drinking trough. 
  • 4 The tonnara. Located on a part of the beach, it was built in the 13th century, renovated in the 18th century and abandoned in 1981. 
  • 5 Torre Bennistra. The Torre Bennistra, from which the whole valley can be seen, dates back to the 16th century, and is a defense tower of the Sicilian coastal tower system.

Among the small bazaars of Scopello you can find colored straw bags, fashionable hats and necklaces of various kinds. In the shop near the fountain, owned by a kind gentleman named Dino, handcrafted ceramics are sold. Across the street, his brother sells honey, fruit and olives from his own production.
