Hattem is an old fortress and Hanseatic city in the province Gelderland. The city lies on the northern edge of the Veluwe. Neighboring communities in the south are Oldebroek and Heerde and in the north Kampen and Zwolle (both provinces Overijssel).

background

The settlement Hat home was mentioned for the first time in a text from 819.

Hattem received city rights from Count Reinaldus II, Duke of Gelre in 1299, was expanded into a fortress at this northern point of the Geldrian property on the IJssel and, as a trading town on the IJssel, became a member of the Hanseatic League.

In 1401 the St. Lucia Castle was built. The building was popularly called "de dikke tinne" "Die dicke Zinne") because it had the thickest walls in the country. In 1778 the castle was torn down and the city had found a well-paying buyer for the stones.

In 1786 Hattem and Elburg became known as the origin of a strong "patriotic" movement (directed against the House of Orange), which, however, was quickly suppressed by the troops of the governor Willem V.

The city celebrated its 700th birthday with the arrival of the Dutch "national saint" St. Nicolaas. The apostle Andrew, on the other hand, is the patron saint of Hattem.

Between November 21, 1887 and October 8, 1950, the city owned a train station on the Apeldoorn - Zwolle line.

Tourist Attractions

Church, synagogue

  • 1  Grote- of Andreaskerk, Market 2. Tel.: 31 (0)38 4442701. In the heart of the old town stands the Great or Andrew Church with the grave of the knight van Bamberg, who fell in the battle for Gelre near Steenwijk in 1522. He was of great importance to Hattem because he pugged a relic of St. Anne while he was alive in France. She found her way (presumably with him) to the altar of the Andreaskerk. Hatten became a place of pilgrimage for a long time. The ceiling of the chapel in which Van Bamberg rests is covered with frescoes from the 15th century. There is a clear difference between the cross vaults in the nave (15th century) and the somewhat more complicated net vaults in the choir from the end of the 15th century. The base of the tower is made of tuff and is from the 12th century many more details that grab the visitor's attention.Open: 1.6. - Mid-September (Open Monument Day), Mon - Fri 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.Price: Entry is free.
  • Carillon. Glockenspiel in the Andreaskerk. It is played every week: Wed (during the market) 2.30 p.m. - 3.15 p.m. and Sat 11.15 a.m. - 12.00 p.m. The concerts from the herb garden behind the are best Fringe school to listen.
  • synagogue, Achterstraat 33. The first Jews settled in Hattem in the 18th century. They used a synagogue, which was no longer used after 1790. After 1850 the Jewish community grew again, and in 1873 a new synagogue was inaugurated. This was located on the Achterstraat. During the German occupation, most of the Hattem Jews were deported and murdered in the camps. Only a few were able to go into hiding and thus survive the terror. The interior of the synagogue was damaged and the Torah scrolls were lost. Since 1950 Hattem has belonged to the area of the Jewish community of Zwolle. In 2006 a plaque was unveiled on the former synagogue in memory of the lost Jewish community. The building is no longer used religiously. Today an advertising agency is based here.

Castle ruins

  • St. Lucia Castle. Tinneplein and parking lot "Het Slot". Between 1401 and 1404 the Dukes Willem I and Reinaud IV of Gelre converted their "Haus zu Hattem" into a castle that could be defended well. It was named Sint Lucia and was the smallest castle in the Netherlands, but had the thickest walls. The two large towers were 21 m in average and the walls were 7 m thick. The castle was popularly called "de Dikke Tinne" (The thick pinnacle). In 1778 the castle was demolished. But today their outlines are marked in the pavement.

building

  • Stadhuis, Market 1. The former hospital "Zum Heiligen Geist" is used as the town hall. Originally from the 14th century, it was rebuilt in 1619 in the Dutch Renaissance. The restoration of 1871 was not very careful, so the restoration, which was completed in 1979, was all the more thorough. The gable on the Kruisstraat was built in 1619 as a town hall, in 1625 with a courtroom (quadruple) expanded.
  • Waag en Hoofdwacht, market. In this building with the city coat of arms, erected in 1621, the municipal scales were housed on the ground floor and the main guard house on the first floor. In the 19th century the scale moved to the court house in the Kruisstraat and this building was used as a school. The external stairs and the large doors of the scale were removed at that time. The former Hauptwache was badly damaged during the renovation in the 19th century.
  • Dijkpoort, Dijkpoort 1. The Hanseatic city of Hattem was fortified with walls and four city gates in the 15th century. Of these gates only the Dijkpoort has survived. It was built in 1400 and in the 19th century under P.J.H. Cuypers, who had a battlement, roof and corner turrets added. Another type of stone used make these additions visible. In front of the gate was a bailey with two round towers. A connecting wall was still preserved. There are loopholes for cannons and arquebuses. On the town side there is a little white house built against the gate where the town midwife lived.
  • Daendelshuis, Kerkhofstraat 9. The widow of the Hattem patriot Herman Willem Daendels (including General of the Troops of the Batavian Republic and later Governor General of the Dutch East Indies) lived in this impressive building from 1619 in the 19th century. The house owes its name to him. Daendels himself was born in the Kerkstraat. The left wings of the house are even older than 1619. During the restoration in the sixties, the gable from 1619 was reconstructed.
  • 2  Fringe school, Kerkplein 16. The building of the "French School" has a long history. From the Middle Ages to the 19th century, the mayor and other gentlemen lived here - in the center of the village. During the first half of the 10th century. the building was used as the "French School" for the first time. Modern languages, including French of course, were taught here. At the Fringe School is the herb garden. A wonderful place to rest, to enjoy and to listen to the carillon concert (on Wednesday lunchtime and Saturday morning). The herbs in the garden can be freely picked for your own consumption.
  • Pand der Liefde, Adelaarshoek 3. The greatest mystery of this house is its popular name: "House of Love". It is believed that it owes its name to the "Sisters of Love" who made a name for themselves during the plague epidemics. However, this theory could never be proven, as the building only ever had a residential function. The patrician apartment dates from 1626 and was the home of the mayor Van Heerde, who was also a tobacco dealer, so it also served as a merchant's house. Behind the ornate dormer window is another pulley that was used to pull goods up.
  • Spookhuys, Adelaarshoek 18. 't Spookhuys is a restaurant in the last remnant of the medieval Sint Lucia Castle that is said to be still haunted.
  • Hoge Huis, Korte Kerkstraat. Built in the 2nd quarter of the 17th century, a quarter of a century later it was extended on the east side. On this part is the so-called "Homoetkamer" (Homoet room) with a rich stucco ceiling from around 1870. The building was always inhabited by noble Hattemers. In 1988 seven apartments for senior citizens were built.
