The Lenne flows into the Ruhr - the start of the reservoir

The Hengsteysee is one of the Ruhr reservoirs and lies between Herdecke, Dortmund and Hagen. It is a popular local recreation area.

The Ruhr reservoirs were built to regulate the water level and generate electricity, the Hengsteysee is the oldest (built 1927-29). The Ruhrverband has published a small brochure about its lake.

The Hengstey (reservoir) lake begins shortly after the Lenne estuary below the Syburg and ends after 4 km at the weir (Hengsteyseestrasse). Even after that, the Ruhr is still very wide, only after the Stiftsmühle (barrage with hydroelectric power station) and the Volme does it return to normal. Then quickly comes the Harkortsee (about 2.5 km).

The water level of the lake fluctuates strongly, mostly between day and night. At night, water with excess energy is pumped into the reservoir at a higher level. During the day, the water is then blown back into the lake through the turbines, and electricity is generated. However, the lake is not pumped dry, the level differences are a maximum of 0.7 meters.

There is a completely paved bike path around the lake, which runs partly separately from, partly together with the not always asphalted footpath. While the north side of the lake has slight inclines, the south side is almost flat. The route is also popular with inline skaters.

The footpath around the Hengsteysee goes over the weir and the Dortmunder Straße and is about 6.6 km, it is a popular running route!

The passenger ship MS Freiherr von Stein operates on a circular route:

The old Koepchenwerk is a real landmark with the pipes running on the slope and the (unfortunately no longer glowing) RWE letters above. Because of the fluctuations in the water height in the lake (at least up to a maximum of 70cm), the banks are not overgrown at all, or even very strangely.

In order to get to his factories faster, Bernhard Wilhelm Funcke had a suspension bridge built over what was then the Ruhr, on the other side he uses the carriage provided. With the beginning of the reservoir, the shed and bridge were demolished, only the southern tower still protrudes from the water, which is now 4.5 m higher and is now Mouse tower called.
