Weather
Herstal Precipitation diagram in mm
| The climate is of a degraded oceanic type characterized by mild and rainy winters and cool and relatively humid summers. If the heaviest precipitation occurs in summer, it is mainly due to thunderstorms at the end of the day or during the night. In winter, there may be temperature differences of the order of 3 ° C between the bottom of the valley, warmed by the Meuse and the Albert Canal, and the top of the latter, which is also much less urbanized. These bodies of water forming a real thermal barrier against the cold winds coming from the east, it is not uncommon, in winter, that if the town is in the rain, the eastern plateau of the valley suffers from precipitation of snow. .

Toponymy
Herstal
Herstal, Heristal at the end of the Roman period and then at the beginning of the Merovingian period, is analyzed as a compound of two Germanic terms, of which the first element Her- dates back to hari "Army" and the second -stal To stall “Establishment”, hence the overall meaning of “military camp”.
However, the oldest quote, in town ... Cheristalius which is in the Vita Lamdiberti episcopi written in 718 and which is the oldest biography of Lambert of Maastricht does not correspond to the etymology linked to the "military camp" but rather refers to Latin carrus meaning "tank" and therefore referring to a "tank establishment". However, you should know that the resting place of the procession proceeding to the translation of Lambert's body from Maastricht to Cork it is located at 900 m in great circle distance and around 1 150 m by the old Merovingian way linking Liège to Maastricht from the famous "military camp", which later became the palatium publicum then the palatium regium. Was there a tank building and repair shop in this resting place? Nobody knows.
In 723, a deed of donation from Charles de Herstal takes place in public in the villa Harastallio. We then find Haristalli in 796 and Haristallo in 798. From 723 to 920, there are 23 diplomatic acts, including seven dated from Herstal, qualifying the place of palatium publicum or, after the year 800 and the coronation of Charlemagne as emperor, of palatium regium in reference to the palace built by Pépin de Herstal.
Milmort
Contrary to what one might think, there has never been a fight or a health disaster that killed a thousand people. The Walloon name of the place gives the answer very well: Mérmwète which means "dead sea". Although being on an intermediate plateau of the valley of the Meuse, a large part was a swamp where the innumerable streams stagnated without being able to join the river. Joseph of Ferraris, on his map published in 1777, informs the village as being "Millemont".

Circulate
Some roads are very old in their layout: the Brunehault road which ends at the current level of rue Marexhe and boulevard Ernest Solvay dates from the period Gallo-Roman, the axis starting from the place Coronmeuse following the streets Hoyoux, way of Liège and rue du Bellenay dates from the time glitch. The other streets at the bottom of Herstal are also quite old, narrow and heavily trafficked. The most crowded area is that of the Basse Campagne commercial area (especially at peak hours of the morning and evening). The parking lot of the hyper-center around the place Jean Jaurès is paying by means of parking meters, However, the parking area of the communal swimming pool is free (mandatory parking disc between 9 h and 18 h from Mon. to sat.) and the one above the Jean Jaurès shopping gallery totally free and accessible at all times except the Game. : 11 h 30 - 14 h 30 due to Herstal-Center market.
By bike, apart from the two RAVeLs, there is no cycle path. Getting around in the Meuse valley or on the Rhées plateau is easy but the passage between this valley and this plateau can be quite difficult with certain slopes that can go up to 12% such as rue Thier des Monts.
Getting around on foot, except on steep climbs, offers no difficulty. The vast majority of roads, even in semi-rural areas, have sidewalks and many urban blocks are crossed by footpaths, which makes it possible to circulate between the gardens.

(1 step at the entrance). Being one of the oldest buildings in the region, it is built in place of a sanctuary erected in 718 by Hubert de Liège at one of the two places where the procession proceeding to the translation of the body of Lambert of Maastricht towards Cork made a stop and whose existence is mentioned in the oldest biography of the saint: the Vita Lamberti Leodiensis. Paired entirely in coal sandstone and in Romanesque style, the oldest part of the current building, that is to say the choir, dates from around the year 1000 and is paired with stones arranged in opus spicatum or "stop fish" which is a sign of antiquity. Yet devoted to Saint-Lambert since the year 718, the sanctuary is better known under the name of "Saint-Orémus". Do not look for this saint in the calendar, he is only known in Herstal and is a local translation of Saint-Erasmus prayed for colic of children as well as for cramps and pains of women in labor of childbirth.
- Licourt Square (
bus 5
, 6, 7, 50, 66, 78, 134 stop "Place Licourt") – If it is by an administrative error that the name has a final "t", it is from Walloon Li court ("The court") as the word originated. The word Walloon itself comes from Latin curtis ("Enclosure"). The location of the current square corresponds more or less to that occupied by the courtyard of the palace of Pépin de Herstal.
- 2 Church of Our Lady of the Licour Licourt square (locality "Licour" without final "t" contrary to the modern name of the place) –
(4 steps at the entrance). Located in the middle of its parish cemetery surrounded by a brick wall, the Notre-Dame church as we can see it today dates mainly from 1758, the year of its reconstruction after the fire of 1738 which only spared the choir and the transept in Romanesque style. The first shrine is said to have been built in the first half of the VIIIe century with materials from the destruction of a Roman bridge by Pepin the Brief on the Meuse and was therefore perhaps that of the Carolingian palace built by Pépin de Herstal and enlarged by his grandson Pépin le Bref.

The collections are focused on the history of Herstal, iron and coal since prehistoric times and the most beautiful pieces of which are seven motorcycles, dating from 1927 to 1959, from the four construction workshops that the town once had . Also, collections focused on Pepinides and more particularly on Charlemagne.

It constitutes the last vestige of the Hanxeller manor, built in XVIe century (1575?) and destroyed in 1857, and is, with the House Lovinfosse, the only witness to the Renaissance period in Herstal. It is fitted out in coal sandstone rubble and presents on its west face the remains of an entirely blind Romanesque tower. The Carolingian period base suggests that it was already part of the Pépin de Herstal palace.

(exterior and courtyard). "Cajot" is the name of the last farmer to operate this farm built in sandstone rubble, bricks and limestone. The oldest parts date from the end of the XVIe century and most recent XVIIIe century. The name of “Charlemagne farm” comes from a legend which would have it that Charlemagne sat on the large stone which is always to the right of the entrance porch. The name of "Ferme de la Chaîne" is much more historical since the operation belonged until 1795 to theSaint-Mathieu hospital at the Chaîne.

(2009, the entire cable-stayed bridge). Opened in 1989, it has a total length of 527 m, whose 411 m suspended. It is a guyed structure with a single central pylon with a height of 102 m made of reinforced and prestressed concrete. The main spans have a span of 168 m (Meuse) and 144 m (Albert canal) and are suspended from the Y pylon overturned by 19 stay cables (between 73 and 175 m in length spaced every 6 m at the level of the apron). The left bank approach span is separated from the rest and curved in order to compensate for any settlements due to the presence of old mine shafts. The fact that it is classified as an exceptional monument of Wallonia is that it is the very first bridge in the world to have been designed with multi-cable stays.strands insulated, a technique now adopted for all cable-stayed bridges. Another reason, which is no longer observable because linked to its construction, is that the adopted implementation maintained the continuous use of the road and river axes, so that a large part of the deck was carried out on the shore. left and pushed into position which was a world first.
