The Enns near Hieflau

In the Middle Ages, Hieflau was important because of the ore mining on the Styrian Erzberg: in 1380 the Eisenstrasse was built and runs through the town. In the 16th century, the hydraulic engineer Hans Gasteiger installed a wooden collecting rake in the course of the Enns river and used it to catch the driftwood that had been felled in the upper Enns valley from the Enns.

The wooden one 1 Hieflauer rakeRake in the Enns was at that time 252 meters long and 11 meters wide. The name Hieflau is derived from the word Hief for rake. From then on, charcoal was intensively produced in Hieflau for the iron industry. For the wedding, Hieflau had 22 piles of 500 to 600 cubic meters of wood each. With the modern blast coke ovens from the end of the 19th century, charcoal lost its importance, and the Triftrechen in the Enns was dismantled in 1908.

Today Hieflau is a vacation spot and starting point for activities in the surrounding mountains.
