The Upper Styria lies in the north of the Styria and represents the high mountain part of the state.

The area includes the valleys Upper Murtal, Mürz Valley and Upper Ennstal and further that Ausseerland, that is the Styrian part of the Salzkammergut.
The mountain regions are the Dachstein-Tauern Region (Niedere Tauern) and the Styrian - Lower Austrian Limestone Alps.

By car from the west - Salzburg - via the Tauern Autobahn A 10 to the Ennstal junction and via the B 146. From Passau Via the A8 to the Wels junction and Voralpenkreuz, then continue on the A 9 (Pyhrn motorway) By train: Mürz Valley and Murtal are through the railway line Vienna - Klagenfurt opened up, the Ennstal through the line Graz - Salzburg.

Because of the mountainous character of the region, it is mainly the valleys that are easily accessible by motorways, roads and railway lines. The connection between Ennstal and Murtal over the Schoberpass leads over one of the lowest and most comfortable alpine passes (only 849 meters) and both the motorway and the railway line manage without bends. Of course, the best way to get to know the region is by car, as in this case the side valleys, which are otherwise only accessible by Postbus, can be easily visited.
The Sölkpass is a mountain pass over the Niedere Tauern. It lies at the dividing line between the Wölzer- and Schladminger Tauern and connects the Murtal with the Ennstal via the Erzherzog-Johann-Straße.
