Tourist Attractions

Sea grotto

Sea grotto

The 1 Sea grotto is a former gypsum mine that was flooded in 1912 after a misdirected demolition. The largest underground lake in Europe (6,200 m²) was created. A show mine was built in the 1930s, which was converted into an arms and aircraft factory by the Nazi regime during the Second World War. Reopened as a show mine in the 1950s, today it is - thanks in part to an underground boat trip - an important attraction in the southern Vienna area.

The armaments factory, which was housed here during World War II, was a branch of the Mauthausen concentration camp. In memory of the forced laborers who lost their lives here between 1944 and 1945, a memorial was set up next to the entrance to the Seegrotte.
