Hiroshima is a prefecture japanese, located in the region of Chūgoku in the west of Honshū, the most important island in Japan.

Understand

This region has always been an important center of commerce in Japanese history. With 2.8 million inhabitants, the prefecture is the 12the the most populous among the 47 in Japan.

The climate changes according to the different places of the prefecture and the seasons; the southern coastal areas are generally warm and do not receive much rain throughout the year, while the northern mountains can experience snow in winter. In summer, the temperature is around 26 degrees Celsius on average, and can go over 35 degrees.

Hiroshima Airport (IATA : HIJ) offers a fairly good selection of domestic flights as well as some from Seoul, Bangkok and various places in China. Flight time since Tokyo, the most frequented route, is approximately 90 min.

The Shinkansen Sanyo going fromOsaka at Fukuoka (Hakata) runs down the coast of Hiroshima Prefecture, stopping at all major cities such as Hiroshima and Onomichi. Direct trains Nozomi from Tokyo take about h to get to Hiroshima at a cost of 18 500 JPY the go.

Parts of the Hiroshima coastline are suitable for traveling by bicycle. The Setouchi Shimanami Kaido cycle path, connecting Onomichi, the islands of Seto Inland Sea and Imabari (on the island of Kyushu), is a major attraction for cyclists across Japan.

  • Peace Memorial Museum and Peace Park A visit to Hiroshima naturally brings people to Peace Memorial Museum and at Peace Park to see the real consequences of atomic weapons. The Genbaku Dome is the famous symbol ofHiroshima, being one of the only structures that remained standing after the bomb hit. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Hiroshima Castle (広 島 子, Hiroshima-jō) - The original castle was built in the 1590s. However, it did not survive the atomic bomb. The current castle is a reconstruction erected in 1958. Only a photo was used in the reconstruction of the castle, so it is not exactly the same as the original castle.
  • Shukkei-en Garden (縮 景園 Shukkeien) - The garden was built in 1620 by the daimyo Asano Nagaakira. The gardens suffered extensive damage in the atomic bombardment in 1945. However, it was rebuilt and opened to the public in 1951.

The okayama prefecture is to the east. Kurashiki with its beautiful and well-preserved historic district, is easily accessible from Hiroshima Prefecture. Other cities in the prefecture include Okayama, which contains many museums, the Koraku-en garden, one of three most beautiful gardens from Japan, and Kibi track among others. The city of Takahashi hosts the famous Bitchū Matsuyama Castle, which is the tallest castle in Japan, as well as one of the original castles still remaining in Japan.

The prefecture of Shimane is located north of Hiroshima Prefecture. AT Izumo, you can find the Izumo Shrine, the second holiest Shinto shrine in the nation, it is quite an impressive site. The city of Matsue is famous for Matsue castle, one of only twelve original castles remaining in Japan, Vogel Park, one of the largest greenhouses in the world, and the residence of Lafcadio Hearn. Shimane also has one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites: Iwami Ginzan, in Ōda.

The Yamaguchi prefecture borders Hiroshima Prefecture to the west. In the town of Yamaguchi, you will find the magnificent Rurikoji temple, the Joieiji temple, and a memorial of Saint Francis Xavier. AT Hagi, there are many cultural sites, such as the ruins of hagi castle, the Hagi town castle, and the Hagi Uragami Museum which houses a large amount of famous Japanese artwork ukiyo-e. For nature lovers, at Akiyoshidai is the Akiyoshidai tray, the largest limestone plateau in Japan and Akiyoshido cave, the largest cave in Japan. Akiyoshidai is not so well known among foreign tourists, but it can be a unique and very interesting stop on your travel itinerary.
