mobility

Map of Hunedoara

Without your own car, getting around is relatively difficult. There are a few taxis, but using them is not recommended. On the one hand there are security concerns and on the other hand, as a tourist, you are guaranteed to pay too high a price.

There are buses, but they seem unreliable. In winter, snow is a problem, in spring and autumn there is mud on the streets and in summer the buses are usually broken.

Tourist Attractions

Hunedoara Castle

In Hunedoara is the Hunedoara Castle (Castelul Hunedoarei), also known as Corvin Castle (Castelul Corvinilor or Corvineștilor) or as the "Dracula Castle". The romantic, late medieval castle was expanded into the ancestral seat of the Hunyadi family in the 15th century by Johann Hunyadi, military leader in Hungarian service, governor of Transylvania and father of the later Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus. The historical model of Dracula, Prince Vlad III. Țepeș of Wallachia, stayed here for a while, but was never the owner of the castle. However, this does not prevent the local tourism industry from marketing it as "the real Dracula's castle". Nevertheless, this mythical place is worth a trip. It is also the city's only major attraction.

  • Ruins of Dacian fortresses in the Orăştie Mountains from the years around the turn of the century, which formed a defensive ring around the Dacian capital Sarmizegetusa. They are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Closest to Hunedoara are the fortresses Costeşti and Blidaru, 37 kilometers east of Hunedoara (three quarters of an hour on partly winding mountain roads)
  • Ruins of Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, the former capital of the Roman province Dacia. 40 km south of Hunedoara (three quarters of an hour by car)
