Tino Island is an island that is part of the municipality of Porto Venere.
To know
The island of Tino is located in the Ligurian Sea, at the western end of the Gulf of La Spezia; its territory is part of the municipality of Porto Venere. It is 500 m from the Palmaria and 2.5 km from the mainland.
Since 1997 the island of Tino, together with the other islands of Palmaria and Tinetto in Porto Venere and the Cinque Terre, has been included among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The island of Tino can be considered, among the three islands of the Gulf, as the "intermediate" one, both in terms of size and position. In fact, to the north we find the Palmaria island, the largest, while to the south there is the smaller island of Tinetto.
The three islands are a few tens of meters apart, giving life to a succession almost in a row of three islands that are in order of size (from Palmaria the largest and closest to the coast, to the island of Tinetto very small and very close to the Tino)
A lighthouse was built on the island called the lighthouse of San Venerio, named for the importance of this saint for the island. Its construction work began in 1839 and since 1840 it illuminates and guides sailors this part of the Ligurian Sea, covering the sector that borders to the north west with the Lanterna di Genoa and to the south with the lighthouse of Livorno.
Territories and tourist destinations
How to get
The surface of the island of Tino is entirely a military area under the control of the Military Arsenal of La Spezia. Therefore it is forbidden to dock any unauthorized boat and to navigate within a safe zone. Thanks to the military reserve, its territory has not only been able to remain free from building exploitation, but has practically become an ecological reserve.
It is possible to visit the island only on two occasions a year: on 13 September on the occasion of the feast of San Venerio and on the following Sunday (only from 08:00 to 18:00). In the past, the visit was limited to a small area including the dock, the cliff, the Sacred Area (including a church), the old casemate converted into a small museum as well as the carriage climb leading to the lighthouse building. In recent years, however, it has been possible to climb to the top of the island and a guided tour of the lighthouse, with the possibility of seeing the optical unit still in operation up close, as well as an exhibition of finds and display boards.
To arrive on the island on 13 September and the following Sunday, a ferry service is available from Porto VenereSpice and from Five lands
