Jokkmokk (Lule Sami: Jåhkåmåhkke, North Sami: Dálvvadis) is a city in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten County and the historic province of Lapland on the Arctic Circle. Jokkmokk is the center of Sami culture in Sweden. It is the capital of homonymous municipality and is known for its annual Vintermarknad (winter market), where Sami from all over Sapmi have been offering their goods since 1605.
background
The first mention of the place goes back to 1602. In that year, King Charles IX decided. the creation of some marketplaces in the north of Sweden in order to tie the north of the empire more closely to the central power. The Sámi indigenous population, who lived nomadically with their reindeer herds, should be easier to reach and record for trade, tax collection and proselytizing. Jokkmokk's winter market was first held in 1605. The small town of Jokkmokk emerged from this marketplace over time.
Precisely because Jokkmokk is repeatedly viewed as one of the cultural centers of the Sami population in Sweden, some basic remarks: The Seeds are an indigenous people in northern Fennoscandinavia. Their settlement area extends from the Swedish municipality of Idre in the province of Dalarnas län in the south over the northern parts of Sweden, Norway, Finland and in the northeast to the coasts of the White Sea and the Barents Sea in Russia. In the course of the 17th century the economic, social, religious and political pressure on the Sami to take possession and use of these areas by the strengthening nation-states increased and led to their colonization, repression and racially based violence. The term "rag" is a derogatory, now outdated term for the seeds. They refer to their former and currently remaining residential areas as Sápmi. In Sweden, the Sami were not recognized as an indigenous population until 1977. That which has meanwhile also been granted to them politically Parliament (Sametinget) works for development of the municipal rights of the Sami. Important political issues are environmental protection, land use rights, reindeer herding, language and education policy.

By plane
The nearest civil airports are in Luleå (180 km southeast), Gällivare (100km north) and Kiruna (210 km northwest). They are mostly about as domestic flights Stockholm or can be reached from Norway. Jokkmokk owns a very beautiful one, built in 1753 and faithfully rebuilt after a fire in 1972 Wooden church. The church has an octagonal floor plan with a bell tower, which is unusual for church buildings, and is designed in the Sami style. The church is surrounded by a double wooden wall, in which the coffins with deceased people were housed in winter because of the frozen ground. These were then buried in the cemetery in the summer.
- 2 New Church (Nya Kyrka), 96231 Jokkmokk, Storgatan.The church, built in 1887/88 according to plans by the architect Ernst Abraham Jacobsson, is a typical example of wooden architecture at the end of the 19th century. The building is square in plan, with a tower in one corner, while two other corners are occupied by entrances with a vestibule. In the fourth corner is the sacristy. The interior of the church has been rebuilt several times and can now be seen in its original state. A tape recording in several languages tells the story of this building in the church.

As the central location of Sami culture in Sweden, this museum is an important documentation center for Sami history and culture. It should definitely be visited when staying in Jokkmokk. A modern exhibition concept offers insights into Sápmi, the land of the Sami as well as into Laponia a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Organizationally affiliated with the museum is a Botanical Garden(Fjällträdgård) (only summer season), which was created behind the museum on the banks of the Talvatis lake (Talvatissjön). There you can walk on comfortable paths through the different biotopes of the garden and look at the mountain plants up close. Original Sami wooden buildings by the mountain researcher Axel Hamberg from Sarek are also housed on the site.

- The Sami Sculpture Park on Lake Talvatis. As part of a "Sami Sculpture Symposium" funded by the European Union, six works of art were created in 2005 in Jokkmokk on the northeast bank of Talvatis Lake between the Hotel Jokkmokk and the Botanical Garden, which can be visited all year round with free admission. These are sculptures by the following artists: Agneta Andersson, Annelise Josefson, Follow Fjällström, Hilde Skanke Pederson, Max Lundström and Per Isak Juuso.

Markets
- Winter market (Vintermarknad). Every winter, at the beginning of February, the traditional and historical winter market takes place. It is one of the oldest markets in the world and has existed since 1605. Originally, the market was used for trade between reindeer herders and settled new settlers. Traditionally, the market today takes place on the first Thursday, Friday and Saturday in February of the year. Originally the market lasted two to three weeks, during which Sami products (reindeer skins, handicraft tools, etc.) were exchanged for food. On this occasion taxes were collected from the officials of the king and weddings and baptisms were carried out in the church. The market only acquired its tourist character from 1955, when the place celebrated its 250th anniversary. Today, as in the past, everyday objects made from the Sami, but also handicrafts, are offered, but the market has expanded to include tourist offers. There is also a wide range of music, readings in the Ajtte Museum, reindeer sleigh races on Lake Talvatis, art exhibitions, etc. The market has around 40,000 visitors annually, with a population of around 5,000 in the municipality. So if you want to visit the market, you should reserve your overnight stay a long time in advance. The autumn market takes place around the tourist office between Asgatan and Storgaran.
- Höstmarknad. The autumn market, which is held on three days at the end of August, is far less well-known and hardly as close as possible to the offers and bustle of the winter market. It is not designed for tourism and serves the needs of the local population. Nevertheless, a visit is worthwhile, also to give the traveler a little local flavor. Polar circle

Jokkmokk is in the immediate vicinity of the UNESCO natural heritage Laponia. The Swedish world heritage Laponia is located in Lapland and is part of Europe's largest, largely unaffected wilderness (if you exclude northwestern Russia).
