Karsibor (German: Kaseburg or Caseburg), is a Baltic Sea island that too Poland belongs. It is in the north of the Szczecin Lagoon in the Swindedelta. It is one of the four inhabited lagoon islands. Much of the island belongs to the Wollin National Park. The name can be translated as Beautiful forest translate.

The only still inhabited place on the island is:

  • Karsibor

The former places Woitzig and Lohberg are now uninhabited.

Other goals

background

The island of Karsibór is located in north-western Poland. Until the 19th century it was the easternmost peninsula on the island of Usedom. After the construction of a canal west of the Old Swine, Karsibór was separated from Usedom and has been an island ever since. It is quite small and manageable. It is therefore particularly suitable for tourists who are looking for peace and relaxation by the water and in nature away from the hustle and bustle.

language

In Poland, Polish is the official and national language. One gets along well with English in Poland. Often menus and information boards are also in German.

getting there

Airports

  • At Szczecin available in Gollnow an international airport (IATA code: SZZ).
  • At Poses there is an international airport (IATA code: POZ) with connections to Munich and Frankfurt in German-speaking countries.
  • Heringsdorf Airfield (on the island Usedom)

By train

  • From the German route network from Usedom to Swinoujscie-Center, continue with the ferry
  • From the Polish route network over Szczecin-Dabie and Gollnow to Swinoujscie

By car

You can arrive by car from Germany via Usedom or via the A11 and the Pomellen / Kołbaskowo border crossing (south of Stettin), further via the Polish motorway A6which eventually turned into the Polish national road S3 flows out, which translates to the island of the same name at Wollin and leads to Swinoujscie on the southern edge.

The island has been with the island since the 1960s with a road bridge over the Old Swine in Swinoujscie Wollin connected. The old bridge was dismantled a few years ago and replaced by a new bridge.

By boat

  • Ferries from Scandinavia (Ystad in Sweden and Copenhagen in Denmark) or excursion boats from Heringsdorf put in Swinoujscie on the Wollin side of Świnoujście. From there it is not far to Karsibór.
  • The island has a marina where (sailing) boats can moor.

By bicycle

Two long-distance cycle routes lead through the region: the Baltic Sea Cycle Route as well as the Iron Curtain Europe Cycle Route. From Świnoujście you can make a detour to the island.

On foot

The European long-distance hiking trail E9 leads through the region. Here, too, you can get to the island from Swinoujscie over the road bridge.

mobility

The best way to get around the region is on foot.

Tourist Attractions

  • In the Karsiborska Kępa bird sanctuary in the north of the island, you can watch the numerous birds that breed here from a lookout tower.
  • Gothic Marienkirche with Gothic altar and inventory, in whose parish Gustaf Adolf lived for about a week in 1630 when his troops landed from Sweden.
  • An old Protestant cemetery with artistically designed tombstones is located in the village.
  • On the island there is a memorial to the RAF pilots who were locked in an Avro Lancaster over Karsibór in April 1945.
  • The submarine port also dates from the Second World War.

activities

  • hike
  • water sports
  • horse riding
  • fishing
  • Ornithology

shop

Amber and silver jewelry is a popular souvenir. The south of Szczecin is ideal for extensive shopping.

kitchen

There are a few restaurants in the village, although the offer in neighboring Swinoujscie is significantly larger. Due to the proximity to the open sea, but also to inland waters, marine and freshwater fish are the main components of regional cuisine

nightlife

Things get going in the village rather calmly and comfortably. Swinoujscie and especially Szczecin offer night owls a wider range of nightlife options.

accommodation

Several smaller pensions and holiday rooms are available.

security

The lagoon coast usually falls flat under water and there are hardly any tides or unpredictable currents. Bathing is therefore usually safe for families with children and swimming accidents are rare. When swimming accidents do occur, excessive alcohol or drug consumption is usually involved. However, if you follow the general bathing rules and do not go into the water when the waves are high, you have little to fear.

climate

Similar to Usedom, Karsibór has a transitional climate between maritime and continental climates. The amount of precipitation is lower and the temperature fluctuations higher (warmer summers, colder winters) than on comparable coasts in Western Europe.
