Naming Wollin

Wollin is up to the Polish Baltic coast between the Pomeranian Bay, part of the Baltic Sea, in the north and the Szczecin Lagoon in the south. The Dzwina strait in the east borders the island from mainland Poland (Treptow coast), the strait Swine in the west separates the island from the neighboring island Usedom.

The region is very varied with many different types of landscape:

  • In the north there is a fine sandy beach which is followed by a cliff up to 80 meters high and 15 km long.
  • The northeast is glacial with numerous dunes, moraines (Wollin range of hills - up to 116 meters above sea level in Mount Relix) and a small lake landscape - the Wollin lake district.
  • The central part is covered by a dense mixed forest.
  • The eastern part forms a fertile plain.
  • In the south, the coast merges into the Szczecin Lagoon in a sea of reeds.
  • In the southwest there is a swamp and peat landscape with dozens of small islands in front of it, of which the Grosse Kricks Wiesen is the largest.

The island has three peninsulas:

  • the Pritter peninsula in the west
  • the Heidebrinker Spit in the east
  • the roof in the southeast

The central part is the Wollin National Park (Wolinski Park Narodowy); the Miedzyzdrojski Las (Miedzyzdrojski Las) partially has the status of a nature park. The east is also protected in the Natura 2000 Park Oder estuary and Stettiner Haff.

security

The Baltic Sea coast usually falls flat under water and there are hardly any tides or unpredictable currents. Bathing is therefore generally safe for families with children and swimming accidents are rare. When swimming accidents do occur, excessive alcohol or drug consumption is usually involved. However, if you follow the general bathing rules and do not go into the water when the waves are high, you have little to fear.

climate

Similar to Usedom, there is a transitional climate between maritime and continental climates on Wollin. The amount of precipitation is lower and the temperature fluctuations higher (warmer summers, colder winters) than on comparable coasts in Western Europe.
