Tourist Attractions
City tour
A city tour through the city center begins at the Kauf-Center Marktstrasse at the corner of Gelderner Strasse. This department store was built in the early 1970s and was a central shopping area for a long time, now mainly a food supermarket.
From here you walk past the fountain into the main street in the pedestrian zone. Right at the beginning on the right side is found House Derp, an old eatery in a monumental building. The main street itself is dominated by many smaller shops. Devotional objects are very important in Kevelaer, including jewelers and boutiques. One should pay attention to the different facades. Especially the jewelers stand out here in very old buildings.
At the end of the main street you come to Kapellenplatz, which is a central point in Kevelaer and for pilgrimages. The Marienbasilika, the candle chapel and the grace chapel are located here.
Now turn left around the square into Busmannstrasse. Here, too, are old shops with numerous shopping opportunities for devotional items. Finally, you come to the crossroads with Anna-Straße and you will find a statue of Hendrick Busmann, the man to whom Mary is said to have appeared and on the basis of which he erected a wayside shrine on the square and around which the Chapel of Mercy was later built.
A little further on, on Marktstrasse, you come to the old town hall, a magnificent building that is still home to the registry office today, for example. On the other side are the new town hall and the city administration, built in the 1970s. If you walk up to it and pass it on the right, you get back to the starting point, the main road.
