  • The Hohenstein Castle was first mentioned in 1163. The Long house, the lower castle was built in 1553 by the council of the imperial city of Nuremberg as the official and residence of the respective caretaker. Nuremberg patricians were employed as nurses. The Bergfrit was demolished in 1809, the bell tower is modern. The Hall is probably the oldest part of the castle, probably built in the second half of the 11th century. The gatehouse or guardroom is the only access to the castle, it was built at the beginning of the 20th century. The Castle chapel is dedicated to St. George, it is one of the oldest buildings in the upper castle and is of Romanesque origin. Altar, cross and chandelier are modern. A teaching garden was created in the castle with many local herbs and medicinal plants.
