To know
It is a large wedge-shaped boulder wedged in a crevasse in the mountains of Kjerag in Rogaland. It is also called Kjerag Boulder or Bolt. Below the boulder, a thousand meters below, flows the Lysefjorden.
Geographical notes
Rogaland sits on a weak tectonic plate, which allowed the river to carve the fjord through the surrounding sandstone mountains. During the ice ages, Norway was completely covered by glaciers; melt water created and dug the valley about twenty-two times. After the last ice age, global warming caused sea levels to rise, flooding the fjords. The boulder surfaced in this area during the last ice age, around 50,000 BC. Following the melting of the Norwegian glaciers, a post glacial rebound occurred on the underlying rocks which, no longer subjected to the weight of the ice, began to expand. In the case of the Kjeragbolten, the rebound was faster than sea level rise, thus locking the boulder into its current position.

How to get
The Kjeragbolten can be reached in a few hours starting from Stavanger and pointing towards Lysebotn which is the tip (botn) of the fjord. From there starts a narrow road that climbs through the thousand meters of altitude thanks to 27 hairpin bends. Once at the top, a walk of about 10 km begins which will lead to the famous boulder. Alternatively, a shorter road involves the ascent of three peaks, on the last of which the boulder is located, starting from an intermediate height.
