The joint municipality Lüchow has around 24,000 inhabitants, the main town - the city of Lüchow - around 9,400. It is the district town and the center of the Hanoverian Wendland and the center for many of the artists and artisans living in the Wendland. The city of Lüchow is surrounded by two branches of the river Jeetzel flowed through.
Lüchow was first mentioned in a document as early as 1158 and received city rights in 1293. The tower of the late medieval city fortifications still reminds of this time. Today it is used as a bell tower for the 13th century St. John's Church. In 1537 Lüchow was hit by the plague. Three fires in the past centuries (1589, 1608 and 1811) destroyed large parts of the village. This is also the reason for the relatively simple uniformity of the appearance of the half-timbered buildings in the old town. The often common handicrafts or even artistic aspects of the half-timbered framework are completely absent. The reconstruction after the last devastating fire in 1811 had to be done quickly, there was no time for such decorations.
City structure
In 1972, as part of the regional reform in Lower Saxony, the joint municipality of Lüchow was created. In 2006 the joint municipality Lüchow (Wendland) was formed from the previous joint municipalities Lüchow and Clenze. Today the city of Lüchow is divided into 24 districts. Some are old, typical of the Wendland Rundlingsdörfer. Not only are the former villages partially under monument protection, there are also many worth seeing in the other villages (today: districts of the city of Lüchow) listed objects.

Churches
![](http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/db/Church_of_Luechow1.jpg/400px-Church_of_Luechow1.jpg)
- 1 Johanniskirche Lüchow (Ev.-Luth. church), At St. Johanniskirche 9, 29439 Lüchow. Tel.: 49 (0)5841 21 91, Fax: 49 (0)5841 97 34 48, Email: [email protected]. The Johanniskirche is a stately brick Gothic church that was destroyed and rebuilt several times. The exact age of St. John's Church in Lüchow can no longer be traced today. What may have existed in terms of founding documents and informative material was lost forever either in the Thirty Years' War (1618-48) or during the great fire of 1811. The current structure was built at the beginning of the 16th century. The bell tower, about 100 m north of the church, is a former tower of the city fortifications. The furnishings, such as the altar, pulpit, the lower west gallery and the gallery stalls, come for the most part from the redesign in 1866. The owl organ was inaugurated on December 3, 2006.
- 2 St. Agnes (Catholic Church), Hindenburgstrasse 6, 29439 Lüchow. Tel.: 49 (0)5841 20 22. The Catholic Church of St. Agnes, built in 1914, is the easternmost church in the Hildesheim diocese. The church was built as a neo-Gothic brick building. A statue represents St. Agnes. The church is a listed building.
- 3 Lüchow cemetery chapel, Berthold-Roggan-Ring 10-4, 29439 Lüchow. The cemetery chapel on the New Cemetery is a listed building. It is an interesting brick structure with neo-Gothic ornamental shapes and a simple interior.
- 4 Sankt-Georg-Kirche Bösel, Breite Str. 18, 29439 Lüchow OT-Bösel. Tel.: 49 (0)5883 388. The year of construction of the church is around 1400, the tower - a field stone building - was built around 1300. After a fire, the church was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style between 1882 and 1883.
- 5 Jeetzel Chapel, Auf dem Berg 9, 29439 Lüchow OT-Jeetzel. The chapel clearly distinguishes three parts: in the east the brick building of the choir on a field stone base, in the middle half-timbered with brick lining, in the west the wooden tower made of hand-sawn oak boards. The chapel was probably completed in the early 17th century, the bell is dated around 1300.
- 6 St. Mary's Chapel, Kapellenstrasse 8, 29439 Lüchow OT-Kolborn. Former manor chapel of the Knesebeck family estate, built in 1616 and rebuilt after storm damage in 1837.
- 7 St. Mary's Church Plate, Plate 4, 29439 Lüchow OT-Plate. Tel.: 49 (0)5841 57 31. The church is a strikingly large three-aisled brick building for a village, built around 1370/80. The main nave has a Romanesque architectural style, which was significantly expanded from 1370 in the Gothic architectural style. The tower is 42.10 m high. The altar and pulpit were donated at the beginning of the 18th century. Both were built in the baroque style. A large fresco from around 1450 was found behind the organ during the renovation in 1900.
- 8 Church of Satemin, Satemin 6, 29439 Lüchow OT-Satemin. The church was built from field stones in the 14th century with a church tower also made of field stones. Despite a later extension made of bricks, these determine the appearance of the church. Inside the church there is a bell from 1478. While the pulpit and altar only date from the previous century, it is certain today that the saints on the altar were carved for an altar in Lüneburg as early as 1340. The baptismal bowl from 1655 is a donation from the family of Baron von Dannenberg.
