Le Locle is the Mother-commune of Neuchâtel mountains, in the canton of Neuchâtel and is the head of the eponymous district. It is commonly called "City of Precision".

Understand

Historically considered to be the first commune of the Neuchâtel Mountains, far from the stress and pollution of large cities and at the center of a breathtaking natural environment, the city of Le Locle is recognized as the world cradle of watchmaking. The fruit of recognized know-how, other industries have developed over the years with, among others, machine tools, microtechnology and medical devices.

It is at the beginning of the 18th century that we can locate the prodigious development of watchmaking. According to legend, Daniel JeanRichard (1665-1741), a young man from La Sagne, managed to repair a watch made in London, then decided to manufacture another, which no one had yet done in the region. He was in fact the very first craftsman to appropriate the complex technique of the pocket watch and to produce this object in his own workshop in Le Locle, which he opened in 1705. He thus became, in a way, the creator of the watch. watch industry in the region. Some even see him as the inventor of the watch. In fact, it already existed at the time, even if it remains much rarer than the clock because of its high price.

Envied far and wide, the quality of life and the conviviality of Locle are not empty words and the 10,500 inhabitants of the Mother Common, who benefit from one of the most important sunshine in the country, know it well [1].
