Understand
The region is the first in Italy in terms of population and the fourth in terms of area, after Sicily, Piedmont and Sardinia. It has its capital in the city of Milan and is bordered on the north by Switzerland (Canton of Ticino and Canton of Grisons), on the west by Piedmont, on the east by Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige and on the south by Emilia-Romagna.
Lombardy, one of the richest territories in France Europe, is the "economic capital" of Italy thanks also to its industries: steel mills (Falck), refineries, car factories (Autobianchi, Maserati, Alpha, Innocenti), publishers (Weather in Rizzoli, Mondadori), factories of furniture, shoes, groceries, etc.

History
The name of the region comes from Lombardy which was the name of the territories occupied by Germanic tribes in northern Italy and which also included the duchies of Spoleto (in central Italy) and that of Benevento (in southern Italy).
The name "Lombardy" began to define a more limited territory when the Austrian Empire, taking possession of this region in 1717, began to indicate it as Austrian Lombardy: so from this point, with the term "Lombardy" began to define a territory that is approximately equal to the modern Italian region.
