Geographical notes
The historic center of Lonate Pozzolo is located in a mainly flat area. In the western area, the presence of the Ticino river gives rise to a difference in height of over 60 m. The municipality is part of the territory ofAlto Milanese and is a few kilometers from Busto Arsizio is Gallarate.
Background
The testimonies of the Roman presence in Lonate Pozzolo are varied: two votive altars from the 1st century AD, a small necropolis, an alleged miliary (small column placed along the most important communication routes), fragments of terracotta, coins found in 1914 and a cistern in the locality of Fugazza.
The first mention of the municipality of Lonate Pozzolo dates back to 973 in an exchange of land between the bishop of Novara, Aupaldo, and a certain Celsone di Lonate, son of Leone. [6] However, the presence on the outskirts of the ancient oratory of San Giovanni Battista attests to an ancient Lombard presence, and in the historic center there are even traces of Roman centuriation.
Already at the beginning of the 13th century, Lonate was a center of some importance. Although its economy was mainly based on agriculture, it already had consul, statutes and notaries, being located near the important Como-Novara road and the derivation from the Ticino river of a large canal called Naviglio Grande, excavated in 1135. In the following centuries its prosperity and, consequently, its population grew, so much so that, at least starting from 1290, in the documents Lonate was described as a "village", that is, a small town.

What see
- 1 Monastery of San Michele. It was one of the three largest monasteries in the country. Now, essentially, the central nucleus used as the seat of the municipal library remains. It was a cloistered female monastery that followed the rule of St. Augustine: the girls who entered it, after the emission of vows, no longer had contact with the outside world and did not leave it even after death (the monastery had in fact its own cemetery inside). A burial was recently found in the north wing of the monastery, during the restoration and reuse of the monument, carried out by the Politecnico di Milano and the Technical Office of the Municipality.
- 2 parish church. On the area now occupied by the parish church of Lonate Pozzolo, until the thirteenth century there was the castle of the feudal lords, which certainly housed a small church. After the destruction of the castle, a small church was built on its area, frequented by the Lonatesi who lived in the northern area of the village; for those who lived in the south there was the church of San Nazaro, certainly older than that of Sant'Ambrogio, but demolished at the end of the eighteenth century. Recent is the discovery, following the removal of a confessional (1997), of the ancient frescoes of the first two side chapels, of the century. XVI: the one on the left represents the Virgin with the Child Jesus, between Saints Bartolomeo and Girolamo; the one on the right represents the Virgin between Saints Peter Martyr and Agata, flanked respectively by San Gregorio and Sant'Agostino. In the frescoes of the apse, dating back to the first half of the sixteenth century, the effigy of Sant'Ambrogio, patron saint of the diocese of Milan and of the parish of Lonate Pozzolo, towers in the center. The eight bells and the castle of the bell tower have recently undergone restoration, due to the wear of the clappers.
- 3 city Hall, via Cavour 20. The town hall building occupies the area of the ancient monastery of Sant'Agata, mentioned for the first time in an act dated 5 June 1340, [19] which bears an investiture by Caterina, "minister" of the Casa Umiliata of Sant'Agata. It was suppressed in 1784 at the behest of the Austrian emperor Joseph II (who established the famous "Josephine laws"). In the second half of the nineteenth century there was a spinning mill and, from the early twentieth century, the Villa Carminati, which in the thirties became the seat of the municipality. The nucleus of the ancient monastery has recently been renovated, which now houses the new wing of the municipal building, and the conservative restoration of the fencing and entrance portals of the municipal park has also been completed under the supervision of the Superintendence for Heritage. Along the way there is an open-air ethnographic museum and installations that tell the history of the territory in the Second World War, with ruins of German structures, war relics such as concrete training bombs, parts of aircraft, trenches, decentralization runways and walls splinter guard. It is part of the Ecomuseum of the moor and of the Via Gaggio.
