background

Graphic representation of the location of the municipality of Losone (Altweiß) in Locarno district (Light gray)

The location of the municipality of Losone is pleasantly quiet. It is located on the right side of the Maggia river below the confluence of the eastern Melezzo in the Maggia. The lack of direct access to the lake has not allowed Losone its tourism industry to be as strong as that of the neighboring communities Ascona and Locarno to develop, but there are hotels, restaurants and typical Ticino grottos. Losone is traditionally divided into three core areas, which correspond to the three oldest parish communities that the Pieve (Italian. outdated for parish) formed by Losone. These three core areas got their names from their respective churches (San Lorenzo, San Giorgio and San Rocco). Above that, the fraction of Arcegno on a hill has always been part of the Pieve and later municipality of Losone.

The people of Losone call themselves Losonesi.

Districts

The parliamentary groups (ital. Frazioni) and hamlet (Borgate) of the municipality of Losone are the village of Losone, the hamlets of Saleggi and Gerre near the river, the hamlets of San Rocco, San Lorenzo and San Giorgio on the plateau and the hamlet of Arcegno on the mountain and the industrial zone of Zandone.

Cardada and Cimetta

Cimetta (in German: small tip) is Locarno's local mountain, whereupon you can comfortably take the funicular to the Sacro Monte Orselina and from there a short walk to the nearby valley station of the cable car (runs from 7.30 a.m. to 8 p.m., in midsummer until 11 p.m.), the one to the new mountain station Cardada (1332 m, 4370 feet), this was built according to the plans of the Ticino architect Mario Botta in concrete shell construction, and from there on foot to the chairlift that takes you almost to the top Cimetta (1672 m) leads. Cardada and Cimetta offer the best conditions for mountain hiking and mountain biking. In snowy winters you can even ski up on the Cimetta, while the palm trees are in bloom down in Locarno. Unfortunately there are less and less snowy winters so that some of the ski lifts have been dismantled, as you can see from the old photos on the page The abandoned Cardada ski lifts Able to see. We particularly recommend the Colmanicchio inn with its terrace at the valley station of the chairlift with a wonderful view.

Lake Maggiore

In the summer months, you can go back and forth directly from Locarno by boat lake which is also called Lago Verbano.

Maggia Valley

The Maggia Valley is the valley northwest of Locarno at the end of which is the Robiei glacier area, which can be easily reached by cable car and offers a wonderful panoramic view. Further down in the Maggia valley there are some original, small villages made of stone houses and cozy Grotto. In spring when the snow melts and after a rainy season, the waterfall near Foroglio is also highly recommended.

Madonna del Sasso

The pilgrimage basilica of the Madonna del Sasso in Orselina, above Locarno on a rocky promontory can be easily reached by funicular (Italian: Funicolare), or on the old, very beautiful, once heavily used pilgrimage route. From Largo Zorzi you go up today Collegio Sant’Eugenio named after Mons. Aimable Jean Claude Eugène Lachat, the former Capuchin monastery of Saints Rochus and Sebastian, and at the hotel Belvedere and comes to a small bridge that spans an arm of the Ramogna stream and from there along the pilgrim path to the top.

Verzasca valley

The Verzasca valley is best known for its arch dam at the entrance to the valley, the 220 m high Contra dam with the Bungee Jump system, with which Pierce Brosnan (called James Bond 007) in the film Golden eye has jumped off. The real beauty of the valley can only be found further down the valley. The emerald green water of the Vogorno reservoir turns the narrow valley with the huge, almost threatening rock walls into a spectacular, attractive and pristine natural beauty. Again and again, spots with smoothly polished rocks invite you to swim. If you want to see a typical mountain village like a few hundred years ago, you should take a trip to the listed mini-village Corippo do. Here you can still see the old stone houses typical of Ticino and how people lived back then.

Valle Vigezzo and Centovalli

The Valle Vigezzo and the Centovalli in front of it (in German: Valley of the Hundred Valleys) west of Locarno with narrow gorges and a small reservoir in Palagnedra. The narrow-gauge railway that crosses numerous bridges and through many tunnels via is particularly recommended here re, with its pilgrimage church from the 20th century, which can be seen from afar, around the image of Mary weeping in the blood, and Santa Maria Maggiore to Domodossola leads.
