  • Designation of the residents of Locarno: Locarnesi.

Etymology (origin) of the place name

The origin of the name derives from the Celtic Loc-ar-on, Place near water (a river and on the bank of a lake).

history

Locarno's origins are very old; what you can see today on the remains of the castle, which was once built by the Lombards and had the rank of a main castle. In 1025 the area was entrusted as an imperial fief by the emperor to Corrado Aurelio Orelli de ’Capitani as feudal lord. The later Lords de ’Visconti, already dukes of Milan, raised the fortifications again. The imperial fiefdom of Locarno was attacked as early as 1502 by a large number of Confederates of the XII who came down from the Gotthard Pass over the Maggia valley, and much was destroyed. In 1513 the confederates of the XII had conquered Locarno. In contrast to other localities such as Bellinzona and territories, which voluntarily joined the Confederation of the XII, Locarno, like Lugano, was conquered by these wars; This is also the main reason why 2013 does not mark the 500th anniversary of being part of the present day Switzerland celebrated. See also kl. Excerpt from the history of the Locarnese.

In October 1925, the Locarno Treaties were signed in Locarno, which secured the territorial status quo of Germany's western border. Participants were the German Chancellor Hans Luther, the German Foreign Minister Gustav Stresemann as well as the representatives of Italy (for a short time also Benito Mussolini), Great Britain (Austen Chamberlain), Belgium (Émile Vandervelde), France (Aristide Briand), Poland (Aleksander Skrzyński) and Czechoslovakia (Edvard Beneš).

In the street

Coming from the north, it is best to drive either through the Gotthard road tunnel or the Bernardino road tunnel to the Bellinzona-Süd exit. Coming from Valais, the route over the Simplon Pass and the Centovalli is the fastest connection, although the road in the Centovalli is extremely narrow and is not recommended for inexperienced drivers or with caravans.

  • 3  Piazza Grande. Piazza Grande im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsPiazza Grande (Q3902225) in der Datenbank Wikidata. The Piazza Grande is a beautiful, large square in the middle of Locarno. In summer, however, you have to think away from the cars in order to have a clear view of the rows of houses. In rainy weather you can walk under the arcades without getting wet and have a coffee or a warm one in one of the cafés Ovaltine-Sip malt drink. In the summer the big film festival takes place here, during which many films are shown on a huge screen for two weeks.
  • Lake promenade. From Locarno it stretches southwards from the ship landing stage along the Lungolago Giuseppe Motta to the Isolino and is unfortunately quite neglected, as well as being very narrowed by the widened main road. It is advisable to go to the more beautiful lake promenade in the neighboring community Muralto to avoid, which runs eastwards along Viale Verbano shortly after the landing stage. Benches are available for walkers along the well-tended flower borders and the bushes and palm trees, ideal in summer to enjoy the warm climate.

There are countless places to swim, but caution is advised as the stones are often slippery, the current is often underestimated and in a thunderstorm in the mountains the water can rise by a few meters within a few minutes. It is recommended that you always ask a local for advice before bathing. However, bathing is often completely forbidden.

For people who do not want to go up that high, the Astrovia planetary path is recommended; it is a model of the solar system on a traffic-free and pedestrian-friendly hiking trail in beautiful surroundings. One millimeter on this way corresponds to 1000 km in reality. The individual models, made of marble and steel, are embedded in Plexiglas and perfectly suggest floating in space. For each model, a text panel provides information about the specific physical and astronomical data. From all sides you have a clear view of the landscape between Locarno, Losone and Tegna. The total length is 6 km and begins in Locarno by the Maggia river.

crime towards strangers is rather rare in Locarno. Nevertheless, it is advisable to observe the usual safety rules as everywhere; Caution helps to avoid unpleasant or even dangerous situations:

Cardada and Cimetta offer the best conditions for mountain hiking and mountain biking. In snowy winters you can even ski up on the Cimetta, while the palm trees are in bloom down below in Locarno. Unfortunately there are less and less snowy winters, so that some of the ski lifts have been dismantled, as you can see on the old photos on the page The abandoned Cardada ski lifts able to see. The “Colmanicchio” inn with its terrace at the valley station of the chairlift with a wonderful view is also particularly recommended.

Maggia Valley

The Maggia Valley is the valley northwest of Locarno, at the end of which is the Robiei glacier area, which can be easily reached by cable car and offers a wonderful panoramic view. Further down in the Maggia valley there are some original, small villages made of stone houses and cozy Grotto. In spring when the snow melts and after a rainy season, the waterfall near Foroglio is also highly recommended.

Madonna del Sasso

Funicolare), or on the old, very beautiful, once heavily used pilgrimage route. From Largo Zorzi you go up today Collegio Sant’Eugenio named after Mons.
