Muralto (Müralt in the Lombard dialect of Ticino) is a municipality Swiss of the Canton Ticino and city of Locarno, on the banks of the Lake Maggiore.
To know
The origin of the name of the municipality derives from the name of the Muralti family, which derived from a Roberto di Chiaramonte count of Lorraine, who had three sons Aurelio, Landolfo and Viviano, who in 1021 immigrated to Italy and took up residence in Locarno forming three distinct families. From the first the Orelli family was formed, from the second that of the Muralti and from the third the other of the Magoria. Landolfo, head of the second family, had a large palace built in Locarno with very high walls for that era.

Background
At the present state of knowledge it is not yet possible to accurately fix the time of the foundation of the settlement of today's Muralto, nor is there evidence of pre-existences dating back to the Iron Age. The ruins of a vicus in the center and some necropolis, however, have Roman origins: during the Roman period it seems to have been the reference center of the region, being in a strategic point on the transalpine trade route.
There is less evidence of the medieval period, of which there are also the ruins of a castle built by the Muralto family, whose portals were subsequently covered by other buildings.Until the split in 1881, that strip of land that today is the municipality of Muralto , then it was called Orselina inferior and together with Orselina superior they constituted a single public body, called Orselina.
In the public gardens of the lakeside promenade, where tourists now stroll, there was once a "scarp" covered with a cobblestone, where the women of the fishermen, wearing a straw hat on their heads to shelter from the sun, adjusted the nets. They were also on that "escarpment" to spin the hemp to obtain the thread used to make the nets. Others hung the nets on the plants, which were then more numerous, to dry them or to mend them. Among the houses there were also stoves where the shells of the chestnuts were boiled in a lot of water. The new nets were placed in this water, which took on a beautiful coffee color and became more resistant.
