Coming from the north, it is best to drive either through the Gotthard road tunnel or through the Bernardino road tunnel (national road 13) to the Bellinzona-Süd exit of national road 2, then continue through the densely built-up Magadino Locarno. Coming from Valais, the route over the Simplon Pass and the Centovalli is the fastest connection, although in the Centovalli the road is extremely narrow and not recommended for inexperienced drivers or with caravans.

The road around Locarno in a long tunnel does not require a vignette. Continue on Ascona past (tunnel) and on the lakeside road (note speed limits!) to Brissago.

Tourist Attractions

Buildings

Unfortunately, like most places in Ticino, Brissago also suffers from the rampant overbuilding with “modernist-cubic concrete” holiday and condominium buildings, which have been built since the 1970s to this day instead of venerable villas from the 19th century and their parks as well as some beautiful patrician houses were and will be. Thus, the townscape is also when driving through the Schweizer Hauptstrasse 13 characterized only by a few preserved historical houses.

Sacred buildings

  • 2  Chiesa della "Madonna del Ponte" (Eng .: Church of the «Madonna of the Bridge», also called Chiesa della «Santa Maria in Selva»), Via Valmara, Brissago, CH 6614 (is southwest of the center of Brissago.). The church built from local granite from 1520 (MDXX) to 1666 (MDCLXVI), on a former cemetery chapel attested in the 13th (XIII) century, is considered to be one of the most important creations of Lombard-Tuscan Renaissance architecture in Switzerland.

The church of the «Madonna del Ponte» is one of the clearest creations of the Lombard-Tuscan renaissance of Lake Maggiore and perhaps Brissago's masterpiece (Gilardoni, MCMLXXIX)

The octagonal dome with colonnade and the free-standing bell tower are characteristic. The construction was planned by the architect Giovanni Beretta in 1520 (MDXX). From 1526 (MDXXVI) to 1528 (MDXXVIII) the altar, dome and choir were built. 1574 (MDLXXIV) to 1600 (MDC) the nave. From 1590 (MDXC) his son Pietro took over the plant and built the main facade according to his plans. The church tower was built from 1545 (MDXLV) to around 1666 (MDCLXVI). Under the archway on the ground in front of the church (protected by chains) is a memorial plaque dedicated to the famous Neapolitan composer Ruggero Leoncavallo 1857 (MDCCCLVII) - 1919 (MCMXIX), honorary citizen of Brissago, and his wife Bertha. The composer died in Montecatini Terme in 1919 (MCMXIX) and was first discovered in Florence in the Cemetery of the Holy Doors (ital. cimitero delle Porte Sante) buried. In 1989 (MCMLXXXIX) his and his wife Bertha's remains were removed from Florence by his earlier request and reburied in the nearby seventeenth-century porch.
  • 3  Chiesa dei "Santi Pietro e Paolo" (eng .: Parish church of "Saint Peter and Paul"), Via Debarcadero, Brissago, CH 6614. In the 16th (XVI) century the Catholic parish church was built in the Lombard Renaissance style (Bramantino).
  • 4  Santuario "Sacro Monte dell'Addolorata" (eng .: Pilgrimage church «Holy Hill of the Afflicted»), Gradinata del Calvario, Brissago, CH 6614 (In the eastern town center, the via Gerusalemme leads to the piazzetta decorated with oleanders, which leads to the stairs of the Calvario. Through the atrium of the first chapel, which is to be understood as the entrance door, one can follow the stations of the Via Crucis to finally reach the chapel "the Giudei" or the flagellation, a small octagonal building with a turret and atrium, at the level of the drivable street to get.). Baroque complex with the church of S. Maria Addolorata, in a prominent location on a rock head. At the beginning of the 18th (XVIII) century when the builder Girolamo Tirinanzi from Cadogno found a way (the via Crucis) prepared over the valley, he left on a rock head of the Monte Capriccio (later Monte Addolorato) a first chapel as a tabernacle in honor of the Madonna Addolorata set up, which was immediately topped up with a lantern as a permanent reminder. As early as 1709 (MDCCIX) it was replaced by a centralizing building. The rotunda is integrated into the current church, built from 1767 (MDCCLXVII) to 1773 (MDCCLXXIII) by order of Antonio Francesco Branca.
