The Alpine Pass is the north-south transition through the Alps with the lowest peak height, it connects them Val Medel / Medelsertal in the top Surselva (starting from Disentis) with the Blenio Valley in the canton Ticino.

The Lukmanier Pass or Passo del Lucomagno is a north-south cross-alpine pass with a road connection. Since 2010, following an expansion of winter safety measures, the pass has been largely kept open in winter, after a winter closure had been in place again from 1980. So now the Surselva via a winter-safe road connection to the south.

The pass, which was apparently already crossed in Roman times, experienced its most important time in the Franconian Empire at the time of the foundation of the Disentis Monastery and in the High Middle Ages, later it was replaced by the more direct connections of the Gotthard and Splügen Passes, although their culmination points are higher. At the Lukmanier Pass it is located at 1972 m above sea level. just north of the pass with the hospice.

After the reservoir was built Lai da Sontga Maria the pass road was moved into a long avalanche protection gallery, the new hospice and the chapel were inaugurated in 1965/67.

getting there

The Lukmanierpassstrasse416 walks into Disentis from the main road 19Andermatt - Oberalp Pass - Disentis - Ilanz - Chur from, in Reichenau it has a connection to the autobahn A13.

In the south, the Lukmanierpassstrasse reaches west of Biasca the Gotthard motorway A2 resp. the main road 2 south.

The Lukmanier Pass is another way of reaching eastern Switzerland from Ticino if there are traffic disruptions on the Gotthard route and the San Bernardino route at the same time, but the journey time on the scenic route is considerably longer.

The road connection is also from Post bus service with the line Biasca - Disentis used.

  • from the top of the pass you can head towards Val Medel - Disentis, to the east towards Luzzone - reservoir and on to Greina - plateau and west towards Ritom - reservoir to be hiked.
  • the Val Medel and the Lukmanier area are also popular with spotlights (mineral / crystal hunters).

climate

After the winter-proof expansion, the Lukmanier Pass will be kept passable all year round at great expense, but winter equipment (snow chains or all-wheel drive) is then often mandatory.
