Ilanz (Rhaeto-Romanic: Glion) is located in the Vorderrhein Valley and is the economic and political center of the Surselva. Ilanz advertises itself as the "first city on the Rhine". In 2014, the merger with the numerous small villages in the area took place, from the municipalities of Castrisch, Duvin, Ladir, Luven, Pigniu, Pitasch, Riein, Rueun, Ruschein, Schnaus, Sevgein, Siat, the larger municipality emerged Ilanz / Glion.
The city was founded on Lukmanierweg at an old river crossing on the Rhine, where the Valsertal flows into the Vorderrheintal. Ilanz was first mentioned in a document in 765 and received at the end of the 13th century as Illiande City rights. It was here in 1395 by the abbot of Disentis, the feudal lords and the peasants of the Gray League, one of three and three leagues, from which the Canton of Graubünden later emerged. So Ilanz was in rotation with Davos and Chur The meeting place of the highest assembly of the Free State of Graubünden.
In 1526, a religious debate was held at the Ilanz Disputation between representatives of the new faith, the Reformation, and the Catholic Church Ilanz articles the position of the Reformed in relation to the Catholic Church was strengthened, which contributed to the development of a mixed denominational community in the canton of Graubünden. The Reformation prevailed in Ilanz, and in 1543/63 Leopold Scharnschlager was able to establish a small Anabaptist community here.
In the Bündner turmoil as part of the Thirty Years' War in the 17th century. between the coalitions France-Venice and Spain-Austria (the states allied with the House of Habsburg) Ilanz joined the French; when the state system of the Helvetic Republic built up by the French at the end of the 18th century. was smashed and Graubünden joined the Swiss Confederation in 1803, Ilanz lost its status as a conference venue.
Today Ilanz is the most important market and business location in the Surselva, here is also the regional hospital, which takes over most of the emergency medical care in the valley. Ilanz itself does not have its own ski area, various ski areas in the area are quickly accessible.
