Obersaxen already had a Romanesque population before the turn of the millennium, in the 12th / 13th. Century German-speaking Valais moved here and founded the German-speaking Walser settlement, an island in the Rhaeto-Romanic language area.

Obersaxen is probably the oldest Walser settlement in the canton of Graubünden. 1 Flond exists as an independent municipality since 1519, before the cleared and reclaimed land belonged to it Ilanz. Probably because of poverty, migrated until the 19th century. hundred inhabitants of Flond as confectioners to Italy, France, Germany, Spain and even overseas. With the return of many emigrants, the place became prosperous and many farms and mountain pastures were built.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Obersaxen developed from a scattered agricultural settlement to a winter sports resort with the construction of mountain railways and ski lifts, the character of the Walser settlement was retained, hotel complexes, but also sophisticated restaurants and nightspots are not found here.
