Magdeburg, in GermanMagdeburg, in Low German Meideborg, also known in Italian as Madeburg, is a city of the Germany, capital of the Saxony-Anhalt.

To know

Magdeburg, the capital of Saxony-Anhalt, one of the German Land once part of East Germany, is famous for its substantial historical and artistic heritage, among which the Cathedral with the tomb of Otto I, first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and the Grüne Zitadelle, a great work of modern architecture. On its territory, second by extension in Saxony-Anhalt after that of Halle, there are two universities: the Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg and the Hochschule Magdeburg-Stendal and is the seat of a Catholic and an Evangelical diocese.

The city celebrated, in 2005, its first 1200 years since its foundation, and since 2010 it has adopted the nickname of Ottostadt, the city of Ottone.

Geographical notes

The city is located, at an altitude of about 50 meters, in the middle of the river Elbe, on the eastern edge of the Magdeburg Börde. It is located in the center of the Magdeburg Region, also known as Elbe-Börde-Heide. The city develops mainly on the western bank of the river, raised above the watercourse and called Domfelsen, formed by sandstone and siltstone of Rotliegend and representing the extension of the Saxon hills known as Flechtinger Höhenzug. Magdeburg is therefore one of the few cities in the Germanic Lowlands to be founded on the rock, but, in addition to occupying the rocky portion, it also developed on an elongated island between the Strom-Elbe and the Alten Elbe and on the eastern shore of the river plain. Magdeburg holds soon after Hanover, among the 50 main German cities, the largest share of public green spaces in urban areas.

From the driest and most pleasant month (March), to the most sultry and rainy month (July), the city offers many activities for all types of visitors all year round but particularly in the spring-summer period.

Background

Built in an area probably already inhabited in the Paleolithic period, the current city is mentioned for the first time in the year 805 in a document of the reign of Charlemagne with the name of Magadoburg which in the ancient Saxon dialect meant "The village of the virgin "(from Magath, meaning" virgin ", and Burg, meaning" fortified village ").

The golden age of the city was undoubtedly the Middle Ages and in particular the 9th century, when it became an imperial city, the seat of Emperor Otto I who had his palace built here, which can still be visited today.

How to orient yourself

Neighborhoods

Magdeburg is divided from an administrative point of view into over 40 districts, although of historical-artistic importance it is only the central ones that attract the attention of visitors who find most of the city's beauties concentrated here.

In addition to the historic center, the Altstadt, all in all quite small when compared with that of other cities of its size, the neighborhood of Stadtfeld Ost, directly to the right (east) of the central station. Stadtfeld Ost has long been a neighborhood little loved by the inhabitants as much as by tourists as it consists of almost all ancient buildings that were in poor condition until the end of the 80s. Over the last twenty years Magdeburg has approved a long series of restoration works that have restored splendor to this district, today an exclusive district due to the large number of pubs and youth clubs (and not only) in historic but completely restored buildings. the last one is to the left of the center the district of Statfeld West, a fairly modern neighborhood occupied for the most part by shops and homes. The northern and southern suburbs of Magdeburg are real independent centers, if not from an administrative point of view, at least in the mentality of their inhabitants. The district southwest of the center, Südenburg (southern village) with its wide streets and tree-lined avenues, it hosts numerous historic buildings and offices of the various ministries. Here you will also find some attractions dating back to the period of the Soviet occupation. Moving south from the center, to the right of the huge Leipziger Straße is the picturesque district of Buckau. Once - and not without reason - the infamous district of Magdeburg, Buckau housed a whole series of light and heavy industries, today used as museums (for example the Technical Museum) and art collectives. Not infrequently the best concerts and youth events are hosted in this district which still has its own railway station, not far from the famous Bunte Straße (the colorful street). Alt Neustadt is Neu Neustadt, whose names can be translated respectively as "Old new city" and "New new city". Neustadt (new city) was the fraction north of Magdeburg, then absorbed into the city fabric and finally divided into a part called "old" and a more recent one called "new", which explains the strange juxtaposition of adjectives. In addition to the numerous public offices, Neustadt hosts the city Zoo and a whole series of ethnic clubs and shops, where at a low price, you can buy typical Greek, Russian or Turkish products.

The name derives from the possibility of practicing water skiing by being pulled by ropes along the entire surface of the lake.
