Mantua (Mantova in Italian) is the capital of the province of the same name, in Lombardy, region of the Po plain, in the north ofItaly.

Understand

Mantua is a city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been named “Capital of Italian Culture 2016”. Due to the power and influence of the family of Corradi-Gonzaga, which had owned the city for over 400 years, Mantua was considered one of the most important cultural cities of the Renaissance and it retains many buildings from that era that made it famous. It is also the city where the composer Claudio Monteverdi created his opera L'Orfeo (1607), the first opera still regularly performed today.
