El-Manahra (Arabic:المناهرة‎, al-Manāhra) is a village in Middle Egypt in the governorate el-Minyā about 13 km north of Samālūṭ and 3 km south of Maṭāi west of the Nile.

ʿAbd el-Masīḥ el-Manāhrī (Arabic:عبد المسيح المناهري‎, ʿAbd al-Masīḥ al-Manāhrī, „ʿAbd al-Masīḥ (Servant of the Messiah) from Manāhra") or. ʿAbd el-Masīḥ el-Maqārī is one of the youngest saints of the Coptic Orthodox Church. He was born here in 1892 near in the village of Abu Shehata in the county Maṭāi born to poor Christian parents. He made an early decision to be celibate. He went to that for this Anbā Ṣamūʾīl Monastery far away in the Western desertwhich was initially not accepted by his father. When his father finally complied with his wish, he became a monk in the Makarius Monastery in the Wādī en-Naṭrūn. He led a particularly celibate life. At the end of his life he returned to el-Manāhra, where he died on Easter Sunday in 1963.

He was respected for his great humility and helpfulness to the poor. He became from the patriarch Kirello VI canonized.

In the place of his hut, in which he spent the last years of his life, a church was built in his honor.

getting there

The church is on the western side of the road 2 from Samālūṭ to Maṭāi, about 13 km north of Samālūṭ. You can arrive by car or taxi.

Tourist Attractions

You enter the three-aisled Church of ʿAbd el-Masīh el-Manāhrī in the North. The middle of the three holy holies (shark) is intended for Jesus Christ, the other two for St. ʿAbd el-Masīḥ.

There is one north of the church Place of worship for the saint. Here is his coffin and a small display case with his personal items like his galabīya and his crutch.

South of the church is the hutin which he lived in the last years of his life. For the Copts this is a particularly holy place, where they also offer their prayer.
