Geographical notes

Mara is located in the historical region of Meilogu and borders on Cossoine, Padria is Pozzomaggiore.

Background

The area was already inhabited in the Neolithic due to the presence of some human and animal remains found in the Filiestru and Sa Ucca de Su Tintirriolu caves, which led to the connotation of the so-called Bonuighinu Culture, which developed in the Middle Neolithic age. The territory was then inhabited in the nuragic period due to the presence on the territory of some nuraghi. The current town was built around the fourteenth century near the castle of Bonu Ighinu (also called Bonvehì) built at the end of the thirteenth century by the Genoese Doria family and subsequently sold to the judges of Arborea, and then definitively sold by Eleonora d'Arborea. to the Aragonese, who after various vicissitudes dismantled it in 1432 by order of the king of Aragon Alfonso V the Magnanimous. In 1436 the barony of Bonvehì was formed, granted as a fief by the same king to Pietro Ferrer, and Mara was incorporated there. The town passed later (1790) to the Amat Manca Guiso, to whom it was redeemed in 1839 with the suppression of the feudal system wanted by the Savoy.
