Marienburg order castle

The medieval castle, built as the headquarters of the Teutonic Order on the site of an old settlement, has an eventful history behind it. Malbork Castle belonged to Poland as early as the 15th century, was occupied several times by Swedes in the 17th century and finally became part of the Kingdom of Prussia in the 18th century. After various uses, renovations and even plans for partial demolition, the complex was not honored again until the 19th century, when Kaiser Wilhelm II made it his residence. Even in the 30s of the 20th century, the castle was often used for official events. However, expansion plans could no longer be realized.

Large parts of the castle were destroyed in the Second World War and later painstakingly rebuilt by the Polish state and has since been open to the public as a museum. However, not only can the castle itself be visited, but numerous permanent and changing exhibitions also invite you to be amazed. In particular, one of the world's largest amber collections should be mentioned here, which houses over 2000 exhibits.

One of the first buildings to be erected is the so-called Hochschloss, which after several renovations has four wings and an inner courtyard with a walkway. In the 14th century, the central castle required for representative purposes was built, and the knight's hall with its impressive vault can still be visited here today. The Grand Master's Palace forms a separate part of the building of the central palace, which is notable for its large vaulted halls. From here the Grand Master administered the order state. Further information can be found on the Museum website.

Foreign language tours are only offered on request out of season and are accordingly expensive. However, it can be recommended to simply take part in one of the Polish guided tours, otherwise you will not get to see most of the interior and thus also the amber exhibition.
