), ☎ 81 3-3717-7720. Built 800 years ago. Surrounded by trees, people visit it to pray or just for peace and quiet. Some come for the practice of the worship of Yakuyoke, a purification ritual to drive away evil spirits. Like all shrines, they sell protective amulets for health, good studies, or traffic safety, but these are distinctly cute. For a traditional shrine, they have a particularly flashy website that offers a good preview.

Where to eat
Meguro is famous throughout Japan for the sanma (さ ん ま) a type of ocean fish. Obviously it is not fished in the area; its fame derives from an old story. In September, there is a festival of sanma where you can try grilled at local vendors.
If you need a cheap snack go for a crepe, smoothie or melon pan from one of the street vendors that operate small trailers or old VWs. For many Tokyo women, the Juyigaoka neighborhood is almost synonymous with candy; it is impossible to list all the many tea shops, pastry shops, large and small bakeries, bars and chocolatiers.
