Melk is a small town in Lower Austria with about 5,200 inhabitants, at the beginning of the Wachau, right on the Danube located, with a picturesque town center.

"Medilica" was mentioned in a document as early as 831, and the place is also mentioned in the Nibelungen saga as "Medelike". In 976, Leopold I made Melk Castle his residence, and Margrave Leopold II handed it over to Benedictine monks in 1089. In 1227 Melk was granted market rights, and in 1256 the city received a golden lion as its coat of arms. From April 1944 to April 1945 there was a branch of the Mauthausen concentration camp in Melk.

On October 13, 1014, the body of Saint Koloman was transferred to Melk and buried. Kirtag is a reminder of this and is celebrated annually on October 13th.
