Melk is a small town in Lower Austria with about 5,200 inhabitants, at the beginning of the Wachau, right on the Danube located, with a picturesque town center.

"Medilica" was mentioned in a document as early as 831, and the place is also mentioned in the Nibelungen saga as "Medelike". In 976, Leopold I made Melk Castle his residence, and Margrave Leopold II handed it over to Benedictine monks in 1089. In 1227 Melk was granted market rights, and in 1256 the city received a golden lion as its coat of arms. From April 1944 to April 1945 there was a branch of the Mauthausen concentration camp in Melk.
On October 13, 1014, the body of Saint Koloman was transferred to Melk and buried. Kirtag is a reminder of this and is celebrated annually on October 13th.

By plane
The closest airports are Vienna-Schwechat and Linz-Hörsching, both are about 100 kilometers by road from Melk. While Vienna Airport is a major international airport with many flight connections, Linz Airport is only a small regional airport.
By train
The 1 railway station is on the Westbahn route between St. Pölten and Ybbs, but international trains do not stop.
In the street
Melk can be reached from Vienna and Salzburg or. Linz via the A1 West Highway. The B3 runs along the Danube on the left and the B33 on the right bank; they are connected by a bridge on the outskirts of Melk.
Also the Danube Cycle Path (Passau - Vienna) runs on both sides of the Danube.
By bus

By boat
The is near the confluence of the Melk in the Danube 2 Landing stage the Brandtner shipping and the DDSG blue danube, there are scheduled trips between Melk and Krems as well as excursions.
Melk is also a popular stage destination for some river cruises.

- 1 Melk Benedictine Abbey
Baroque style from 1702 to 1736 by Jakob Prandtauer, an impressive monastery complex. The pen itself is enormous. Its southern front is 363 m long.- The Collegiate church impresses above all with its unique interior. The ceiling frescoes were created by Johann Michael Rottmayr. Musical angels float in the 64 m high dome and underline the impression that the sky is opening up above. The columnar high altar made of marble is a self-contained composition in which the columns, crowns, canopies and medallions have their place.
Other sights are around 200 listed objects, its buildings, parts of the former city fortifications or wayside shrines.

There are numerous smaller shops in the pedestrian zone of the old town, they carry items for daily needs. The range of souvenirs cannot be overlooked, primarily products related to the apricots grown in the Wachau, starting with dried fruits, jams and tipsy High-proof apricots. Variations of pastries and other sweets are a must. A major shopping center with a number of supermarkets is the 1 Lion Park in the eastern part of the city. For northern Germans: apricots are apricots.
