The A1 West Autobahn is the first Austrian autobahn that was tackled after the “Anschluss” of Austria, but was only completed in 1967 over its entire length, the inner-Austrian one Salzburg With Linz, Sankt Pölten and Vienna connects. In the European context, it forms part of Europastraße 60 between the border with Germany and the Steinhäusl junction west of Vienna and part of Europastraße 55 between the Linz junction and the Salzburg junction Federal motorway 8 at.
The length of the motorway is 292 km. So she is (according to the South highway A2) the second longest in Austria.
background
The construction of the motorway, which had already begun on the German border in 1938, was stopped by the Second World War in 1942. The further construction led to further road releases from 1958 and the construction of the motorway was completed in 1967 with the closing of the last gap on the Strengbergen.
Regions
particularities
Like (almost) all Austrian motorways, the "West Autobahn" is also vignette required! The only exception since December 2019 is the section from the German border to the Salzburg-Nord junction. The mileage count (and the counting of the connection points at the same time) begins in Vienna-Auhof, but only at kilometer 9, and increases to the west.
traffic
The busy autobahn between Vienna and Linz has mostly six lanes.
