Mettingen is a city in Tecklenburger Land.

Mettingen is mentioned in a document for the first time in 1088. Up until the middle of the 15th century there was a noble family of Mettingen here. In the 17th century, Mettingen was the nucleus of the dead trade. The company C&A later emerged from this trade. Mettingen is also the production site for Coppenrath & Wiese.

getting there

By plane

The nearest international airport is the Münster / Osnabrück Airport (30 km south).

By train

Mettingen lies with his 1 railway station on the route of the Tecklenburger Nordbahn (Rheine – Recke – Osnabrück). However, no passenger transport is currently offered on this (reactivation is being discussed). For the time being, the nearest train station with regular services is in Ibbenbüren, 8 km away (Westfalenbahn lines Bielefeld – Osnabrück – Bad Bentheim and Hanover – Minden – Osnabrück – Rheine). From there it is another 25 minutes by bus to Mettingen. The next long-distance train station is Osnabrück, from there a bus takes 40 minutes to Mettingen.

By bus

Mettingen is at the Regional traffic Münsterland connected. There are regular connections with many places in the region, including Ibbenbueren (Lines R20 and R24, each hourly, travel time 25 minutes) and Osnabrück (Line S10, every hour, travel time 40 minutes).

In the street

The most direct way to Mettingen is via the A30. Here you either take the Laggenbeck exit and drive via Laggenbeck to Mettingen. Or you can take the Ibbenbüren exit and drive via Ibbenbüren, Brockraden and Schlickelde to Mettingen.

By boat

In the north of the village, the Mittelland Canal crosses Mettingen over a length of around 1.5 km. The nearest marina is in Recke (Westphalia)

Tourist Attractions

  • 1 House Telsemeyer - The Tüötten Museum is located here. An extensive collection of furniture, documents and utensils is a reminder of the way of life and tradition over the years.
  • 2 Schultenhof - The school museum and the postal museum are located in the Schultenhof. The school museum shows everything about the nature of the former rural village schools. The Postal Museum is based on a private stamp collection and shows, among other things, the oldest stamp in the world.
  • 3 Catholic Parish Church of St. Agatha - This 19th century church has some sculptures from the 15th and 16th centuries inside.
  • 4 Evangelical Church Mettingen - Fragments of the previous church from the 12th century can still be seen in the current building.
  • 5 Michaelsbrunnen - In the place of the fountain, the choir of the previous church of the current St. Agatha Church was to be found. This fountain was built to commemorate this and those who died in the German Wars of Unification.
  • 6 George Oak - This oak, several hundred years old, is officially listed as a natural monument.
