Molenlanden - Molenlanden

Molenlanden is a community in South Holland in the Netherlands. It was only created in 2019 through the merger of the municipalities of Giessenburg and Molenwaard, with the latter itself not being formed until 2013 through such a merger.

The most famous sights of the community are the zum UNESCO world heritage belonging windmills from Kinderdijk. However, these are not the only windmills in the municipality; there are some in almost every town, 46 in total! This is where the name of the community comes from.

getting there

By train

The only train station in the municipality is the 1 Arkel train station. Trains go from there to Geldermalsen as well as over Gorinchem to Dordrecht. If you come from further away, it is best to travel over Dordrecht on, there are a lot of intercity routes there, for example to Arnhem near the German-Dutch border. Depending on where you want to go, it is also worth taking the bus in Gorinchem or Sieldrecht (see below).

Tourist Attractions

There are 46 windmills in Molenlanden. Therefore, only those mills are mentioned here that stand out from the others, for example by being able to visit them.

Kinderdijk

The Kinderdijk mills are the most famous sight in the region and a symbol of the whole of the Netherlands. There are 19 windmills that stand between canals and were built to pump the water out of the area below sea level. Due to the location on the canals, a boat trip is ideal. There are providers on site who organize such tours. Among the mills are 18 Dutch mills and one coke mill. Most windmills are not open to the public, but there are two exceptions:

  • The 1 Molen No. 2 can be visited from March to October every day from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., outside of this season only on weekends from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Also the coker windmill 2 De Blokker is open to visitors every day.

As it is well known, Kinderdijk is well attended and many tour groups make a trip here.

Streefkerk

  • The 3 Streefkerk village church is a large, older brick building with a decorated tower.
  • There are several windmills around Streefkerk:

Nieuwpoort is a small fortress on the Lek, an arm of the Rhine. There are historic, small brick houses everywhere in the village. It is surrounded by a bulwark in the form of a dike with a moat around it.

  • The 11 Stadhuis is at the end of the Buitenhavens, a canal and a small square. It was built as a town hall around 1700. It is made of brown bricks and is decorated with various coats of arms. There is a clock and a small turret on the roof. It bridges the water that passes from the Buiten to the Binnenhaven.
  • South of Nieuwpoort, the black-painted coker windmill stands between several canals 12 De Westermolenthat can be viewed when it turns.

Noordeloos

Noordeloos is a nice, small village with historic houses, which is located on a canal that is directly adjacent to the houses and terraces. However, there are no special sights, apart from the two mills near the village, which unfortunately cannot be visited.

Arkel

activities

Bike tours

The flat area in Molenlanden is well suited for cycling tours. You can drive along rivers and canals or go on excursions to the towns of the municipality and the surrounding area.

boating

Molenlanden is already in the Rhine-Maas Delta, so there are plenty of waters here for boating. It is not far National Park De Biesboschwhose islands and wetlands can only be explored by boat.

There are several marinas in Molenlanden:

  • 1 Streefkerk harbor
  • The tiny one 2 Port of Nieuwpoort
  • The 3 Rietveld harbor is barely no longer in the municipal area, but in close proximity to Arkel.

shop

Supermarkets are available in many places, otherwise the offer is larger in nearby cities (see trips).

Souvinirs abound in Kinderdijk.
