Mongar (མོང་ སྒར) is the administrative center of the district of the same name in Eastern Bhutan.
To know
Perched on a hill, the old bazaar area has been extensively expanded in recent years, making the city one of the largest settlements in the region.
It is one of the oldest educational centers in the country.
Geographical notes
The city is located on a mountain high above the Kuri Chu River; typical feature of Eastern Bhutan, where small river valleys and the main cultivation areas are widespread.

How to get
By car
Mongar is on the road between Thimphu is Trashigang.
From Mongar there is a road to the north in the direction of Lhuntshi.
By bus
There are buses coming from Thimphu which take two days to arrive with an overnight stop at Jakar.

The small town can easily be explored on foot.

- 1 Yagang Lhakhang (It is located in a village on the outskirts of the city). Built in the 16th century by Sangdag, the youngest son of Pema Lingpa, a famous tertön. This temple is famous for its collection of religious treasures, masks, musical instruments, armor, ancient weapons, and woodblock blocks used to print prayer flags and texts. Religious treasures include a statue of Gautama Buddha discovered by Pema Lingpa in Mebartso, Bumthang and a kīla made by Pema Lingpa himself.
- In this Lhakhang the Chamil dance festival is held in the fifth month of the Bhutanese lunar calendar. This festival is one of the oldest in the Eastern Bhutan.
- Mongar dzong. The annual tshechu are held here.
