    Annunciata - Pisanello school
It stands on the left bank of the Enza on the border with the Reggio area, where its presence was necessary to protect the Parma area. The land here forms a natural terrace, the Monticulus Rivoli which gave its name to Montechiarugolo. The ancient nucleus of fortifications, dating back to the thirteenth century and destroyed in 1313, was rebuilt in the fifteenth century; its current appearance is largely that given to it by Guido Torelli, who was leader of the Visconti and was invested with the fief of Montechiarugolo in 1406. In the following sixteenth century the castle hosted within its walls Pope Paul III and the King of France Francis I ; it became the center of a cultured and patronage court that hosted artists, painters and writers of the time, especially by Pomponio Torelli. His son Pio was involved in the conspiracy of the feudal lords in 1612, following which many nobles (including the Duchess Sanseverino di Colorno) were tried and put to death, and their assets confiscated. After the Unification, the castle was sold in 1867 to Antonio Marchi, and is still owned by the family. The interior is characterized by rooms with a refined Renaissance taste. The Salone delle Feste has high cross vaults with the image of the Visconti snake and the coats of arms of Pope Pius V, great-uncle of the wife of Pomponio Torelli, Cardinal Agostino Trivulzio and Cardinal Michele Monelli, also related to the family. The decorations in the hall are from the second half of the 16th century, from the Baglione school. There Ancient Room it is a pictorial triumph, with eight large allegorical figures on the cross vault, large figures of angels, caryatids placed next to the ribs. There Hall of the Four Elements or of the Sirens it preserves on four large canvases by Domenico Muzzi the Water, the Air, the Earth and the Fire. On one side of the room there are remains of the ancient sixteenth-century frescoes. In Middle room there is the fresco that is considered the castle's masterpiece. The Archangel Gabriel and the Virgin, one and the other in the splay of a window overlooking the loggia. The work, of exquisite refinement, is placed in Lombard Gothic and is attributable to the school of Michelino da Besozzo. The loggia it is accessible from the eastern rooms of the castle and is frescoed with a cycle of fifteenth-century paintings, with the representation of the Visconti snake. Finally, the walkways are well preserved, and the garden is decorated with eighteenth-century statues from the Reggia di Colorno.
The legend
It is said that the girl Bema, in her wandering among villages and castles predicting the future, in 1593 arrived in Montechiarugolo just as Duke Ranuccio I of Parma was visiting the Counts Torelli. Bema suggested that she read his hand, unaware of the real terror that Ranuccio had for everything concerning the occult. The Duke ordered the immediate arrest of the girl and her imprisonment in the Rocchetta prison, but she was then released by popular acclaim. Thus began a life of continuous flight and wanderings for Bema to escape the persecution of Ranuccio. Her life finally ended in Montechiarugolo, where however she was well liked by the people, with whom Bema still maintains contact today, appearing to the young women on the eve of the wedding to instruct them on their new life. On the night of May 18, the fairy Bema appears in the private rooms of the castle hoping to see the beloved man again.

Monticelli Terme

In the panorama of the thermal centers of the Parma area, Monticelli is the most young. With the discovery of thermal waters and the beginning of their use in the Thermal baths in the 1920s the center changed its name from the ancient one Montepelato to the current Monticelli Terme, and together it starts its own economic and tourist-curative development.

Among the monuments of the historic center: the church of San Donnino, Villa Mariotti Micheli and the Tempietto of San Giulio.

Itineraries

  • Castles of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza - Scattered over the Parma and Piacenza Apennines, but also present in the plain to guard the natural border of the Po, the numerous castles of the ancient Duchy of Parma and Piacenza characterize the whole area. Originally military bulwarks, many of them have kept the appearance of an inaccessible fortress, many have gradually transformed their war nature into a refined noble residence; all perpetuate over time the atmosphere of adventure, fairytale and legend that has always been linked to castles, many of which tell of the presence of spirits and ghosts.
