To know

Montelupone is one of the 188 Italian villages awarded by the TCI (Italian Touring Club) with the Orange Flag and among the most beautiful villages in Italy, a circuit of small towns characterized by a "strong historical and artistic interest".

Geographical notes

Montelupone is located 12 km from the Adriatic Sea, 13 km from Macerata, 20 km from Loreto, 9 km from Recanati and 48 km from Ancona (regional capital). It borders the countries of Macerata, Recanati, Potenza Picena, Montecosaro and Morrovalle. The river flows in the flat area where the hamlet of San Firmano is located Power.

In the center of the village stands the Palazzetto del Podestà (or dei Priori) with the civic tower, dating back to the fourteenth century. Next to it is the Civic Art Gallery. The Town Hall, dating back to the nineteenth century, houses the Nicola Degli Angeli Historical Theater, in neoclassical style. As for the churches, the Church of S. Francesco boasts an eighteenth-century wooden choir, four statues of the theological virtues made in stucco in 1752 and an organ from 1753. On the main altar was the splendid Madonna del latte by Antonio da Faenza ( 1525), now housed inside the Collegiate Church, which also houses the Chapel of Sorrows repainted by Cesare Peruzzi between 1934 and 1941. The Church of S. Chiara, seat of the ancient convent of the Clarisse, was built between the 15th century and XVIII. Inside there are the doors inlaid by Cristoforo Casari in 1796 and the large canvas of the Annunciation of the Virgin, a copy of the original made by Federico Barocci, dating back to the 18th century. About 4 km from the center is the Benedictine Abbey of S. Firmano. Built in the 9th century in the Romanesque style with three naves: it features the precious lunette of the Byzantine style portal. Inside there is the crypt with the relics and the statue of the saint in polychrome terracotta. The symbolic product of the city is the artichoke, to which a festival is dedicated in May. Millefiori honey is also excellent; ApiMarche takes place in August (Apiculture, Environment and Agriculture Market Exhibition). On 11 March the feast of the patron saint San Firmano takes place.
