Mossburn is a place in the region Southland.
background
The small town of Mossburn is east of the Lake Manapouri in the Southland region. The place refers to itself as Deer capital New Zealand, this is underpinned by a large deer figure in the center of the village. After the deer released into the wild became a plague in the middle of the last century due to the lack of natural enemies, the animals were hunted intensively to reduce their numbers. In Mossburn around 1970, necessity was made a virtue. The wild deer continued to be hunted and the first deer farms were set up at the same time. This made it possible for New Zealand game to be delivered to Europe frozen in good quality. This also served the industrial use of deerskin. You can recognize the fences of the deer farms by the fact that they are about 2 m high and thus higher than those of the sheep farms. These are falling somewhat nationwide, in New Zealand the trend is more towards cattle farming and dairy farming.
Mossburn is also known nationwide as the location of one of the first wind farms in the country, it is located about 6 km southeast on the White Hill, their wind turbines have been rotating since 2007.
