In the province Southland the small town of Te Anau is located directly on the lake of the same name, about halfway between Queenstown and the Milford Sound. Apart from hiking trails, the city is indeed poor in sights, but with its numerous shops, banks, restaurants and overnight accommodations, it is an ideal starting point for exploring the region.

background

Te Anau is located on the lake of the same name, with an area of 344 km² it is the largest lake on the South Island and after the lake Taupo the second largest in the country. The economy of the town of Te Anau is almost entirely dependent on tourism. Almost 3,000 guest beds with around 2,000 residents clearly show this.
