Moutier is a Swiss City in Canton Bern.

background

The German name is Münster, although it is still in use, but because there are several Münster in Switzerland, the French name Moutier is becoming more and more common in German-speaking Switzerland, as it is unique.

Since the two surrounding gorges at Moutier and Court were not necessarily friendly towards the construction of the road, the Roman roads led past Moutier.

The origin and importance of the Moutier settlement is linked to the history of the Moutier-Grandval monastery. A settlement developed around the monastery, from which the town of Moutier emerged in the High Middle Ages. This was ruled by a governor.

getting there

In the street

The city is on the main road number 6, from Basel above Delémont to Biel. At the same time, the A 16 motorway is being built here. In Moutier, the main road number 30 divides Balsthal above Goose fountain. This comes from La Chaux-de-Fonds and runs between Sonceboz-Sombeval and Moutier with number 6.

By train

Moutier station is an important hub station. This is where the IR stops Basel above Delémont to Biel. These use the Grenchenberg tunnel to Grenchen SO. The regional trains to Biel run over Tavannes and Sonceboz-Sombeval. This is also where the line of the former Solothurn-Münster Railway begins, which today belongs to BLS AG. This line leads over Gänsbrunnen and the Weissenstein tunnel Oberdorf (Chairlift to the Weissenstein) and then to Solothurn respectively.
