The 1,395 m high Weissenstein is one of the most striking mountain peaks in the Jura. It is often referred to as the local mountain of Solothurn designated.

history

The pass road of the same name runs over the mountain, which runs from Oberdorf over the Weissensteinpass (1,279 m above sea level) to Goose fountain leads. With gradients of up to 22%, the narrow mountain road is one of the steepest in Switzerland and is now paved throughout. In winter it is closed to private traffic and, when there is enough snowfall, serves as a nationally popular toboggan run. The starting point is easily accessible thanks to the Weissenstein cable car.

The mountain has been tunnelled since 1908. The 3701 meter long railway tunnel is part of the railway line from Solothurn to MoutierOn the Solothurn side of the tunnel is the Oberdorf train station, from which a chairlift, which is divided into two sections, leads to the Kurhaus on the Weissenstein.

landscape

Typical folded Jurassic with sinkholes and other signs of weathering.

Flora and fauna

Since it is a karst area, there is corresponding drought, which, together with the altitude, is also reflected in the flora.

There is a Jura garden on the south side of the Kurhaus Weissenstein. Here you will find around 200 typical plant species marked with signs in a very small space.

climate

In autumn there is often the most beautiful sunshine here, while the central plateau disappears under a blanket of high fog, and depending on the altitude, it can also get cold in summer. There is also usually a strong wind blowing across the Jura range.
