Balsthal is a Swiss Municipality in the canton Solothurn.

It is the capital of the Thal district.
The community consists of the village of Balsthal, the town of Klus and the hamlet of Sankt Wolfgang
It is located on the earlier important trade route over the Oberer Hauenstein. This pass was already used by the Romans, as the important military road led from Aventicum (Avenches) over the Obere Hauenstein Augusta Raurica (near Basel).
getting there
From the motorway exit Oensingen the A 1 (Zurich-Bern) the bypass built as a car road leads directly into the Klus on the main road number 12, which leads into Balsthal. From there, number 12 continues over the Upper Hauenstein Pass Waldenburg and LiestalIn Balstahl, the main street number 30 begins, which is about Goose fountain to Moutier and further after La Chaux-de-Fonds leads.
From Oensingen train station, where the ICN Constancy-Zurich-Olten-Solothurn-Biel stop (attention: the ICN St.Gallen-Biel-Lausanne bypass the train station), the Oensingen-Balsthal-Bahn leads to Balsthal. Usually there is a connection to the trains in Oensingen. In the evening the trains are replaced by buses.

Tourist Attractions
- The Town of Klusthat nestles in the tight clot. Unfortunately, the main road runs through the middle.
- In Balsthal the Herrengasse is worth seeing, because there are some remarkable buildings here. For example, the early classic Old Office House, the early Baroque style Gasthof Kreuz, the Biedermeier style Rössli (formerly a restaurant, now a gallery) and the former grain house, which was built by Paolo Antonio Pisonie.
- Catholic parish church of the three wise men. The church was built over the remains of an early medieval church, which in turn consisted of parts of a Roman building. Most of it originated in the 16th and 18th centuries.
- St. Anthony's Chapel. It dates from the beginning of the 17th century. Inside there are baroque vault paintings.
- St. Ottillien Chapel. Although the chapel was donated in 1511, it was replaced by a new Gothic building in 1662.
- Alt-Falkenstein Castle. With the Museum Alt-Falkenstein.
