Oensingen is a Swiss Municipality in the canton Solothurn.

background

The village is located at the southern foot of the Jura, where the Klus is after Balsthal is located. That is why it has been an important traffic junction since ancient times. There was already a road crossing here in Roman times, as the roads from Aventicum met here (Avenches), Augusta Raurica (at Basel) and Vindossia (at Brugg). However, the settlement can be traced back to the Paleolithic, because a reindeer bone with an engraved ibex was found in the Rislisberg cave. The bowl stone with 8 bowls and the various figures on the southern slope of the Ravelle come from the Neolithic Age. The remains of four castles from the Middle Ages on the Lehnfluh testify to the importance of the Klus von Balsthal. In the municipality of Oensingen is the Neu-Bechburg built in the first half of the 13th century by Baron von Bechburg. It is still well preserved and is the landmark of Oensingen that can be seen from afar.
