Background

The human settlements in the Muraverese territory can be traced back to prehistoric times as evidenced by the megalithic complex of Piscina Rei, and that of Nuraghe Scalas. The area was then subject to Phoenician, Punic and Roman settlements.

In the Middle Ages the village of "Murahera" first formed part of the Giudicato of Cagliari, curatoria of Sarrabus, and then of the Giudicato of Gallura from 1258. After the latter's disappearance, it was managed directly by the Maritime Republic of Pisa. Following the Aragonese invasion in 1324, it passed under the protection of various families, including the powerful noble family of Carroz, Centelles and Osorio.

Due to its geographical position, Muravera was the object of continuous raids by Barbary pirates, who were often rejected by the locals. For this purpose, between the end of the sixteenth and the first half of the seventeenth century, the coastal towers were built by the Spaniards that can still be seen from the beaches today: Torre delle saline, Torre dei ten cavalli, Torre di Capo Ferrato.

In 1839, in the Savoy period, the fiefdoms were abolished. At the end of the 19th century the municipal lands were closed by the notables of the town.
