Lainici Monastery is a monastic settlement located in Gorj county, Romania.
Historic
The settlement was built (between 1812-1847) by several local people, boyars with a helping hand, among them Mrs. Stanca Măldărescu. During the First World War, German soldiers, stopping here for a while, defiled and destroyed the old church and burned the archive. In 1926, the pious Visarion Toia together with six other monks completely rebuilt the monastery, restoring its spiritual importance. The monastery will be occupied for the second time in 1961, this time by brigadiers and the army, during the construction works of the Bumbești - Livezeni railway.
The old church
The old church is built of brick on a stone foundation, with a porch supported on eight pillars with broken arched arches, narthex, nave and altar. It houses several interior frescoes dating from 1860 and an iconostasis with Byzantine-style icons. The old church is dedicated to "The entrance to the Church of the Mother of God" and is on the new list of historical monuments in Gorj County.
The new church
The new church (cathedral type, with two overlapping churches), dedicated to the "Healing Spring", was consecrated in 1990. The architectural plan of the new church was made like the division of the History of the Christian Church into two fundamental periods; thus: the lower church is adorned with paintings from the life of Christians from the year 1 to the year 313 (with the saints and martyrdoms of that period); and the one above is painted with moments from the history of the Christian church from the persecutions to the present day. The place of prayer houses the icon of the Mother of God "Quickly Obedient" brought from Mount Athos. The miracle-working icon is painted on sandalwood and covered with gilded silver foil.
