Polovragi Monastery is a monastic settlement located in Gorj county, Romania.

Historic

It dates from the 16th century and was founded in this way; by Radu Comisul and Pătru Spătarul in 1505, during the reign of Radu cel Mare; by Danciu Pârâianu, son of Hamza in 1645 and by Constantin Brâncoveanu, the ruler of Wallachia (1688-1714). The ensemble of Polovragi monastery (church, hospital, abbey, bell tower) is part of Romania's Christian cultural heritage and is on the new list of historical monuments in Gorj County.

Church of the Assumption

The church was built in Byzantine style, according to a trilobed plan with side apses, with porch, narthex, nave and altar. The tower, with wide ornate niches at the top, is polygonal in shape. The porch, in Brâncoveanu style, supported by eight stone columns, houses the tomb of Brâncoveanu's sister. The linden wood iconostasis is richly decorated with floral braids. The (Byzantine) painting, executed in fresco, was made during the reign of Constantin Brancoveanu by the craftsmen Andrei Constantinos, Gheorghe Istrate and Ranite, the first students from the Brâncovenească School of the Hurezi Monastery.

Infirmary

The sick church „St. Nicolae ”of the Polovragi monastery

The hospital of the Polovragi monastery dedicated to "Saint Nicholas" was built in 1736 and is the foundation of the abbot of the monastery at that time, Lavrenție. The church was built according to a rectangular, three-compartmental plan, with a semicylindrical vaulted narthex, nave and a semicircular altar on the inside and pentagonal on the outside. The tower has a square plan and is storeyed. The entrance to the place of prayer is on the west side. The painting dates from 1738 and is attributed to the master painters Ioan and Gheorghe, as an inscription from the proscomidiar tells us.

Location

The monastery is located near the Olteț Gorges (which separate the Parângului Mountains and the Căpățânii Mountains), on the outskirts of Polovragi in Gorj County.
